I can just see everyone saying how this is one of those myth type statements where the US spent millions of dollars and the Russians used a pencil

But.......................................

My bank have sent me a pen for Christmas,
Guaranteed to work in freezing cold, the boiling heat, gravity-free vacuum of space and also under water :) -45c to + 120c. I am desperately trying to keep a straight face as I type this because I can never see me in any of those environments although I would love to go into space, but the idea of using my pen in the temperatures experienced by astronauts working outside the Space Station are not for me. :D They also state the pen is used by both the US and Russian astronauts so bang goes the pencil theory which incidentally was also a myth as a broken lead, or the shavings from the sharpening would also be very hazardous.

I'm giggling about this pen but I suppose it is a nice gesture.

John

some bankers will need one for a space environment -given the vacuum created in their accounts by the Sub prime market;)

How quaint & old fashioned, just as most major retailers are about to abandon the use of a cheque as a means of payment.

Is there still a financial transaction that requires a pen rather than a PIN nowadays??

My keyboard can do all those things.

Look:-

In Space.

Underwater.

easy peasy the old Sony laptop circa 2001 still rattling on.

Can't see it working. Piccies please.:)

I just wrote a cheque out and decided to do it under water.... The pen works perfectly but the cheque is a bit of a mess and has gone all soggy, still it's for the plumber :D

Beats me why they call it a pen, it's a blooming biro with an airtight seal around the ball point thingie and also the refill doobrie.

I have one of those, fantastic little pens until the ink runs dry! (very few places seem to stock the pressurised cartriges around my house!)

Re the pencil; I thought they were graphite, not lead...

Good point: when are cheques going out? And what implications will it have? + what keeps them as valid forms of payment?

Cheques will stay if only because without them the royal mail will go bankrupt.

I thnink they will as there will always be the small business person that needs paying like our plumber the other day.

Have you got the Internet address for the refills? If not I can send it via pm.

I wonder how the featured astronaut on the space walk will manage to use it? :D Wilkl he take his glove off and reach inside a pocket for it?

Let me rephrase what I said...

"The cheque is in the post..."

Given the number of times I have been told this in the past then my original assertion MUST be true.

I thought the pen that wrote in space was the Papermate with it's pump-action.
