What do people think of these 2 cars? The SLK55 has the folding roof, a shed load of torque and an amazing noise. BUT the Z4 MCoupe will be a true drivers car, manual box and a wonderful high revving engine.

The SLK has an auto gearbox which at times is great, other times annoying, the interior is a bit plasticky and the BMW beats it in that respect. Fuel consumption will be better in the Bimmer, other running costs would be similar.

Thoughts?

The SLK will hold its value better and looks and sounds an awful lot better!

z4's are ugly.

Hmmm. As far as I'm concerned, it's academic as my budget won't stretch to either.

Ask me again in 5 years.. I'll be searching the classifieds. I have to say I'm not a fan of the Z4 ragtop but the coupe doesn't look too bad..

Or will it be a Cayman S.. decisions, decisions ;)

Cheers,

Gaz

The z4 ragtop is ugly, but the coupe is a true Ugo Zagato 'homage'. In white, it's one of the most striking cars around. Not classically beautiful in a Pininfarina way, but definitely not ugly!

Agreed, and a very pleasant surprise after the previous 'delivery van' Z3 hardtop!

I am surprised the interior looks more 'plasticky' than the BMW. This is a Mercedes-Benz forum, so I don't suppose there will be many members that prefer the Z4. Me personally.... I love the sound of the 55AMG. That noise alone sells the car. Major, major :) :) factor.

Personal opinion, but having just lived with a Z4 for 3 years, I can say that the cabin is truly one of the most ugly and uninspiring to be fitted to a car for donkey's years. Materials quality is excellent, but the SLK interior would need to be made of drinking cup plastic in order to be less welcoming than the Z4. It certainly looks nice in the SLK when I stick my nose into one at the dealership.

Z4 depreciation can be compared to the flying capabilities of a house brick - and I can only imagine the Z4M will be worse (if the Z3M was anything to go by).

I know MB residuals aren't what they were but is there any BMW that doesn't plummet? Not in my experience. Even their rare models (the supposed bankers) such as the CSL become depreciation black holes in a matter of months after the launch date. It's a shame because they really are very good cars. One of the reasons I moved to MB, though, was to excape the BMW depreciation experience.

I know about BMW depreciation as I got bent over on the M3 CSL I owned. You guys are convincing me that I am a fool even considering the swap to a Z4 MCoupe. Actually last night I gave it full beans on an A road and I had a Yamaha R6 chasing me. We stopped at some lights and he tapped on my window and asked "what the hell engine is in that thing?". I said nothing that would worry his R6 and he laughed and pointed out that on a sweeping A road he did have a little difficulty keeping up. :bannana:
