Phoning Whilst Driving

I think the point is that passengers will be able to see what's going on on the road and will, subconsciously or otherwise, gauge when the driver needs increased concentration on the road, and stop talking.

Not if they're anything like my OH or her non-driving mother who have been known to badger me for a response when it is patently obvious there's a lot going on around and my full concentration is on driving - I just ignore at these times .

Yes, the offence is "use a mobile phone whilst driving" and would be seen as a contributory factor..

I'm still half waiting to be pulled if seen practicing my driving commentary when alone in the car ; although I'd hope my driving wouldn't attract attention :)

I had blue tooth in my last car (Jag XJ) and found it very distracting talking to someone I could not see, so I very rarely used it and think all phone usage should be banned.
In our village I often see horse riders and cyclists using their mobiles up against their ear but not sure if this is also banned.

Last week in Kilmarnock this cyclist wobbled across the road ahead of me , coming out of a supermarket , with bags of shopping hanging from his handlebars , then proceeded to wobble erratically down the middle of the road . The car ahead of me passed to his near side with a loud blast of the horn , and it was only when I did the same to his offside ( using the full width of the road to give him a wide berth ) that I saw he had a phone clamped to his ear and was cycling with one hand !

I'll see if it's still in my dashcam .

They are such a faff to refill, his actions are of a lunatic!

Pipe users can best answer your question R12S. Similarly, a can of Coke squashed into your skull won't be very pleasant. A bottle worse still.
FYI, when I'm vaping, I keep it away from my face approaching junctions etc - anywhere I perceive a risk of something pulling out on me. Helps with my 'risk assessment'!

I've often wondered what would happen if you crashed while picking your nose.

You deserve to crash doing that!
Sitting in traffic and seeing the driver behind picking - then eating it! - grosses me out! Yeuch!!!

Or using the phone at all....

This why we (I'm a traffic bobby) when attending serious / fatal collisions we seize phones, they are then interrogated for any use at the time of the collision. This evidence will then be used to help lay blame and convict..

Couldn't agree more. My other half has a 2013 Ford Focus and that allows you to make a call without taking your hands off the wheel or eyes off the road but lets be honest, how necessary is it to make a phone call when driving? :dk:

Still staggers me how many people you see drive past whilst physically holding a phone to their ears though. Winds me right up.

Why does it wind you up? Is it more dangerous than holding a fag?

Blimey! How hard was the collision! :D

I live not too far away from the Central Mosque... seen quite a few lady drivers drive by with a phone firmly wedged in their hijabs... a makeshift hands-free kit.

A young girl behind me today was smoking and texting, hardly paying any attention to the road at all ... came up my backside way too close for comfort a couple of times ...

I'll see if I remember to get memory card from the rear dashcam tomorrow.

Winds me up because I personally think it distracts people from the important thing which is driving a car.

I don't think smoking whilst driving is a safe move either, having a stick on fire in your hand whilst controlling a tonne+ of metal, glass and plastic isn't ideal.

People are bad enough drivers as it is let alone with added distractions. I've seen a number of stupid manoevres by drivers and on more than one ocassion noticed they're using a phone held to their ear oblivious to what they've done. Ok, so they may be like that regardless of the phone but again I doubt it's improving their driving.

You only have to watch people walking down a street while nattering away on the phone to realise how much their concentration/awareness is impaired.
