Pics of my new kit

OK, first off, thanks everyone else other than grasmere for assuming my performance has gone down. It's really nice to know that you guys are all such experts that you can guarantee my performance diminshed from a performance enhacing product.

My performance has increased by 5BHP, not a lot I know, but I wasn't expecting a lot. The forced induction is still integrated within this kit. If any of you bothered to look inside the airbox, you can place the cone exactly in the direction of the forced cold air feed..

And to think we never noticed.

I'm 20 years old and yeah, I'll do what I want with my car. People criticized me for my clear rear lights, people said my loud exhaust was stupid. Personally, I don't care. My car is damn sexy and I like it the way I like it. All this about increasing the bonnet temperature so my pistons melting... Are you serious?! You're actually confirming that my piston heads will suffer from MELTING because the temperature under the bonnet will reach temperatures of over 800 degrees?! Highly unlikely. So in short, chill out.

So if inlet air temperature goes up by 80-90 degreec C what do you think the result might be, other than reduced performance I mean..

I'd also just like to add that Koolvin had an induction kit in his 180, and his cone was nowhere near his forced induction.

Slight difference, koolvin had a um..err, let me think, heat shield and bonnet vents to keep the cone away from engine bay heat. Oh and also his car had "forced induction" by way of a turbocharger and also an intercooler to cool the intake air.
You no longer have the cool pressurised air of the original setup as your airbox is now open.
You MAY have increased output, but I would think this is less than if you had fitted a free flow airfilter.
Have you measured the inlet tract pressure and temperature before and after your mod?

If you want to regain some forced air induction cut the top of your original airbox and refit it with a seal that fits tightly around the pipe. You'll lose the induction roar but gain power. catch 22!!

Also lag the exposed pipework with some heatproof lagging to stop heatsoak.

That might be an idea, I'll call Merc on Tuesday and see how much another airbox cover is.

Iyse,

What's the surface area of this new filter compared to the old one?

How did you measure the 5bhp increase?

The only way to measure bhp increase would be to have tested the car on a rolling road before the mod and then after the mod.

My thoughts exactly ;)

I feel for Iyse, he has paid out for a modification which looks very professional. He then has kindly photographed this smart looking modification and asked for comments.........

This is where things go downhill slightly. I think all the comments have been very constructive, but sadly 'destructive' in the nicest of ways.

No one likes to hear negative comments about their pride and joy, thus I feel Iyse is now defending his corner. 5bhp improvement??? No doubt the owner will say yes, but perhaps others might need convincing.

Good luck with the conversion,
John

Let the man do what he wants! Being a young Mercedes owner myself i like to experiment with my cars as well, its the way we learn. Still prefer modifying a Mercedes than a Ford.
If he likes the way he mods his car i thinks its up to him, constructive critism is nice, but noone likes to hear their mod being destructively critisced. I agree with Glojo's comments.
Thanks for sharing the mod with us, if you are happy with the sound/performance keep it the way it is.

I should have said I'd got it rolling road tested in my original post.
This was on Friday, in my overly extended lunch break at work. But I'm
sure as I add this on to the end, most people will be unconvinced.

Excellent - I'm glad you are happy with it :)
