Plate transfer question

If I transfer my personal plate from my old RR Sport to my new one tomorrow at the DVLA, will I be able to show it on my new vehicle straight away?

Or have I missed something?

The hard part is sorting the insurances so that the same plate no. is on two cars at the same time (ie. not strictly possible so you need to speak to the insurance company to sort out two cover notes for each car) PITA actually but do-able.

Having done this several times it's actually quite easy.

1. Get the plate made up.
2. Take all your papers to LVLO
3. They issue you with a new tax disc and ask you to destroy the old one.
4. Advise Insurers.
5. Put the plate on with new tax disc.

Last time I did this a couple of months ago the whole thing took an hour and a half, that's including a forty minute return trip to the LVLO

Yes,
All paper work (MOT, RFL disc) will be issued straight away except V5

The Worcester office now send all items to Swansea, may as well post the items direct now, taking around 2 weeks at the moment..

Last time I transferred plate at DVLA Sheffield office few years ago. MOT certificate and new Tax disc were issued straight away with new registration. V5 sent to DVLA Swansea just green v5c was returned to me. Also they gave me 24 hrs (if I remember right) to put new plate on car. Not sure if it still there, but used to be little plate printing place just around corner from DVLA Sheffield.

Sent from my iPhone using MBClub UK

I transferred a number last week, posted to Carlisle Monday got it back Wednesday. Most impressive!

Having done this recently at the Wimbledon office, it took a few weeks. Everything is sent through the post. When I first put the plate on, everything was issued there and then, so it's clearly changed there.

Sadly not anymore - the local VLO's are closing by the end of 2013 so they are winding down - I dropped all the paperwork into Northampton personally when I picked up our GL on 1st July and chased Swansea today as I'd heard nothing and it's not even on the system yet...

The lady on the counter said that starting 8th July Northampton wouldn't even accept the paperwork; it was entirely different as recently as January when I got a plate swap back via post within about 5 days.

I've not had a new MOT, RFL etc done in front of me for many years now, but I'm just a private individual - Leeds used to be my local VLO (until 6 years ago) and they had stopped issuing exchange discs right back then if my memory serves me correctly.

The form V617 (I think) still says to send to your local VLO, not Swansea - why?

Just done one at Sheffield for my BIL, they send everything away, RFL and MOT and paperwork to get plates made was back within 7 days, V5 took nearly 4 weeks.

I just tried to retain my wifes personal registration and the route now is long and convoluted indeed. I used to go into the DVLA office in Northampton, sort out the documentation and hand over the money, they issued a replacement MOT and RFL disc as well as the registration certificate to allow one to have the correct plates made up, and the V5 would arrive about 4 weeks later, buy post.
Now the DVLA office no longer accepts the documents and all has to be posted to the Valley of doom. I am told that this could take 4 weeks and our buyer is a tad disappointed as you can imagine, because he has to wait for the car.
Another leap forward for GB Plc :wallbash:

When I bought my last car, it was on private plates which the previous owner was having transferred onto his new car. Whilst driving to the dealer to pick up the new non-private plates for my car, I coincidentally drove past the previous owner in his new car - with his private plate showing both on my car and his...

I went to the local DVLA office but all my paperwork sent to Swansea and it took weeks. The tax even ran out while they were faffing around with it.

I sold a car to an acquaintance once, so left the plates on my old car, with instructions for DVLA to send the new docs to me, instead of which, they went to him. Had it been to a stranger, I may have lost them, so lesson learnt.

As an aside to that, a friend of my wife noticed the old car in her neighbourhood regularly, and thought I was up to no good!

As per above they will not do it over the counter now.
The only transfer they do over the counter is if you have the reg on a certificate. Then it can be done instantly.

If its a car to car transfer you can go on a world cruise in the time it takes.

I was sure that was the case, thanks Jay.

*Rant alert*

The one government business that has been very good whenever I've dealt with them has been ruined by people that think they know better, yet again. What reasons have they given for ruining the DVLA I wonder, supposed 'cost-cutting'?

*Rant over*
