I found a website, PlateWave - The Social Network for UK Car Owners, that has thousands of uploaded photos of cars with a database of their registration plates models and owners (if known).

I typed in my number plate and my cars photo immediately popped up!

Nobody has asked me for my consent to do this, but as the car was parked in a public place, I can't see that I have any rights to object. What is worrying me is that this website is providing valuable information to plate cloners.

There must be some very sad people about to want to go around uploading pictures of car numberplates.

In the same way that nobody has given consent for their plates to be displayed on this forum's number plate thread.

I typed in the number plate of my old coupe but didn't come up with a pic.:(
Still in the true spirit of such social network sites which are not designed for keeping people in contact but more about selling them advertising have I mentioned:----
MY COUPE IS STILL FOR SALE IN THE FORUM CLASSIFIED SECTION!

:p:p:p:p:p

Cloners have all the information they need when a car is on view in a public place. The only way to avoid the problem would be to cover or remove the number plates.

I can't think of anyone with a private registration number that would want to hide it from others. Why buy it in the first place if that was the case?

I would have thought that personalised plates were less likely to be cloned, a normal plate has more anonymity.
