Why the hell do ALL Mercs New & Old seem to Rust so much ???? For the price they cost you think they would be the best quality paint... What are they doing wrong ? Why dont Audi's BMW's etc rust as much ???

Audis have had galvanised bodyshells for the past 20 years or so .

How did you get on?

BMW a no go a lot of mayonaise in top end of engine so not a good sign. Audi turned out to be mis advertised and is actually an S8 4.2 litre V8. I'm not sure the seller realises what they have but only problem is it has some electrical gremlins, Going back with our electronics expert tomorrow so he can check it out on the scanner and advise as apparently with these cars some of the electronics can cost more to put right than the car is worth so fingers crossed, Will report back tomorrow.

I looked at S8s a while back, they were surprisingly cheap to insure and buy. Body parts are expensive, really expensive. IIRC a light from Audi was c£1k, as was a bonnet.

If I had one I'd be in a French jail after re-enacting Ronin :o:cool:

Well I have gone and done it SWMBO is now the owner of an Audi A8. You would not believe the hassle I had identifying this car, car is debadged (better watch for the cops and my FPN for that:D) V5 says Audi A8 Sport (No such car) Seller says its an S8 Get VIN number and a phone call to Audi Technical and it turns out to be an Audi A8 Sportline edition, when the car was new it was ordered with £8k of extra's  It has everything but the best bit is the sportline package on the A8 this consited of 18" Alloys, Suspension lowered 55mm, higher output engine and uprated brakes. Brakes are Alcon six pot with 4 pads in each caliper  this thing stops like nothing I have ever driven other than cars with carbon ceramic brakes. Was owned by a property developer that used to drive to Poland a lot in it so a bit up on miles 103k but it has had no expense spared full Audi Main dealer history, all the keys and the upgraded leather interior looks like it has never been sat in.

Bad points, the electrical gremlins were traced to a faulty electrical ariel relay, easy fix. Needs new Brake discs and pads all round (not taking any chances here and just ordered OMP pro pads & discs) Ariel does not work so i'll simply fit a new one, water pump is noisy so will change that whilst we are at it, then attack the paint for a little correction to some swirl marks and she is good to go.

Will post up a few pics soon but i reckon I got one of the bargains of the century

Ian, good luck with the car.

It sounds as if it has the engine from the S8 which is IIRC 360bhp and the normal 4.2 was a 320bhp engine. The uprated suspension sounds like an S8 too. Perhaps this sportline edition was S8 parts in the more discrete A8 body.

I look forward to seeing the car, hopefully in person, at Ollies in 4 weeks time.

Well done!

Certainly is the time for barges. Picked up my 2001 S600L yesterday and went for a drive last light - it moves quite quickly :-)

Bring it to the meet!

Quick pic of our new addition to "The Fleet" apologies for poor quality but taken on phone, will post some better ones later on when I've sorted and detailed it.

Well done! Looks super from that photo. In my social leper days I was driven halfway across the Netherlands in one of those, and it was an effortless and comfortable experience.

OK more work complete on SWMBO'S new motor, new brake discs and pads all round gone for genuine Audi Sport Pro, now fully serviced, waterpump replaced, been over it with a fine tooth comb and can't find anything else, sent a sample of oil away for oil analysis so we can have a good guess at the internals from the report, it's booked in for paint correction and a bit of paint to some scuffs on Wednesday, SWMBO'S private plate back on it and its good to go and boy does it go

Only problem now is it has left me hankering after a V8 the 230K seems a little numb after being in and out of this beast. Might start looking for another weekend car in the summer as I'm already contemplating getting rid of the Volvo for a New E Class next year, will I ever grow up :D

Congrats on the new car. I've got a soft spot for the A8's too. Very nice...
