Please Help, Warranty Issue

Spend the money and have an independent motor vehicle engineer asses the car.

Has he managed to bottom out the car eg speed hump, kerb (number of front aprons and undertrays "mashed" is unbelievable) or are there any tell tale scuff marks.

Protective bodywork such as liners do not generally come lose without some physical contact BUT then the "elk test" did expose MB to some basic design flaws.

Great car - good choice.

thanks for all the info guys, I am going in to drop the car off with him today, turns out the the mercedes themselves will not be paying for the repairs but the dealership franchise is "going to put their hand in their pocket"

he will also get the other issues sorted out at the same time.

As I said he loves the car and the technology is breathtaking, its just a shame his experience has been tarnished so much from two poor car sales deals

Many Thanks again

Jim

Well sadly this has reared its ugly head again, it seems the two new wheel arch liners are popping out again, .

This time the dealership will not replace them and also Mercedes are still not admitting there is an issue.

Does anyone know if there are any other examples of this happening??

Any help would be great

The fact MERCEDES UK have not admitted to any issue does indicate they feel the problem is due to external circumstances and not to a design fault. Usually on a prestige model such as the S Class Coupe they would readily acknowledge a design or assembly fault and rectify it FOC. The fact that the dealer took on board the previous repair as a goodwill gesture would tend to corroborate this. After a further 4 months usage all indicators point to an external cause for the damage. It might pay to examine exactly how and where your FIL uses his car and whether anyone else drives/ parks it?

'It's not fit for purpose'.

This particular phrase keeps cropping up where members cars are showing classic signs of misuse such as underbody and wheel/tyre damage.

It makes me wonder what kind of 'purpose' is being referred to?

driving 4 miles to work and back and the odd long run on a business trip, not off roading or green laning.

Only himself drives the car. He had the O/S arch liner changed and the other N/S liner was on back order.

By the time the N/S liner was in stock the O/S had already popped out and had to be put back in place.

definitely not outside influence unless you cannot drive these cars in the rain or more than 30mph.

I did notice myself the wheel arch doesn't actually have a "lip" at the bottom where you would expect the arch liner to sit in

Unless there were certain clips omitted during the assembly line process it seems strange that this should be a recurring problem. Bearing in mind the past history of this problem with MB I can only suggest negotiation to see if the problem can be resolved. Going in guns blazing is unlikely to achieve anything other than MB putting up the shutters even further .
Your problem is the car is a very rare model meaning anecdotal evidence from other owners may be difficult to find supposing there is a problem---- no reports on any forums so far.- and without that its going to be difficult. Might be instructive to get a look at the wheel arches in another 500 coupe to see if there are any differences in the assembly/ retaining clips etc
