Car
This and that.
Which would be the better buy for doing 35-40k per year:

'06 C320CDi with 25,000 miles or '05 E320 CDI with 40,000 miles. Both Mercedes Approved.

Similar price, same engine (obviously). Spec differences?

TIA

PJ

PS: Or a Jag S-type...

Hello

I think it would depend on your size (not bering funny) the E class will have more room round you and if your in ait a lot then that could make a difference.

The C class is very nice but still quite small, I guess the new E class will be out soon through that could hit the price of the current shape?

ooops just noticed that its an 06 C-class so the older shape... I guess ?

So I would go for the E320cdi and have an Estate please. Just a lot more car in my book.

As far as the car goes there is probably not much in it other than better fuel economy from the C, but for comfort and safety the E wins.

Both would do the job well.

Personally though I would go for the E as doing that mileage comfort will be a big factor, and dont shoot me here, my opinion is that the E is a more comfortable car than the C.

Yes, W203, not 204. I am small enough to fit in it. We have no kids (Yay! :bannana: ), and the C is big enough...

That was more-or-less my attitude. Except I seem to recall that a few days ago you told somebody on here that if he was buying a W203, then he'd need a warranty. I could be mistaken though.

Obviously, both these cars would have a Merc warranty, but if one is going to be less reliable than the other, then that's a key factor with the annual mileage in question.

I thought that post facelift 203's were considered very reliable as well.

My dad has a prefacelift 203 which has had a few electrical gremlins which have been sorted (no more jump starting:D ), and that too has been very good.

Me too, but then there was this post (not from Dieselman - sorry DM).

I think the OP must have a pre facelift, I will have a look at his previous to try and find out.

I remembered the post and just couldn't think of the username but could picture it...LOL..:D

Is the E in question a facelift or pre.? I only ask because of SBC.

Which facelift? There seem to have been loads. It's not the current pointy grille one, but as for the one before, how would I know?

From HonestJohn

"Whole range revitalised from July 2006. 20bhp more for E220CDI taking it up to 170bhp with better economy and lower emissions. New E350V6. New 388bhp E500. And mad and bad 514bhp E63AMG that does 0-60 in 4.3 seconds. Re-engineered 'facelift' models easily identified by horizontal 'eyebrow' like louvres inside the tops of the headlights."

Also recall info and SBC stuff

"May 2004: 35,000 UK car recall of cars built from March 2002 over fault with electronic SBC brakes which can fail without warning and revert to the hydraulic front brakes back-up. 31-3-2005: Worldwide Recall: On vehicles with six and eight-cylinder petrol engines built between June 2001 and November 2004 the voltage regulator in the alternator is being checked and if necessary replaced. On E-Class and CLS-Class models made from January 2002 to January 2005, new battery control unit software is to enhance the on-board power supply. In addition, the braking systems on E-Class, SL-Class and CLS-Class models from the production period June 2001 to March 2005 are also to be updated. Customers are being informed in writing."

After the May 2004 recall, and before the '06 facelift.

With that mileage it would be the E for me. Mainly motorway miles I would guess. And therefore bigger = safer. However the C would be nippier and slightly more economical.
Depends where your priorities lie.

In fact, it turns out the E has is the newer 320 with the 3.0 litre engine, and I presume it also therefore has the 7 speed gearbox.

This happened to my E55 on Wednesday. Stopped, refuelled, switched the engine on, alarm bells all round! Silly software in the battery distribution box in boot.

Fixed and I was on my way within 30 mins.... thanks to MB Loughborough!
