Points Of View Please

7 Speed in W203 works well, I like the size of the C, as I use it for work and find it fairly comfy. But do wonder about build quality sometimes, mine had not been perfect. E may be as bad, but the ones I have been in feel more of a premium product.

Performance of C320 cdi brings a smile though!

In fact, it turns out the E has is the newer 320 with the 3.0 litre engine, and I presume it also therefore has the 7 speed gearbox.

Not sure when the 7G was introduced on the W211, I don't think it follows that because it's a V6 diesel it will be 7G.
I also don't think it's relevant for the diesels and the 722.6 is generally more reliable/nicer than early 722.9

Do you have a VIN to check.?

Yes, but it doesn't mention the gearbox, except the part number.

It's going to be a couple of weeks before I know if this discussion will take on any real-world relevance, by which time the car may well have gone anyway...

Either put the VIN up or PM me. I'll get the datacard, that will show the box or EPC will.

E320cdi for me, so much more car IMHO and well made too. The E class is one of the comfiest things out there, and for a miliage like that its probably the best choice. And its not that much slower than the C class and is a pretty rapid car.

what about a CLK?

Why? You got one for sale? ;)

I have an inbuilt and pathalogical inability to spend more than £20k on a car.

I can't find a late, low mileage, diesel (270 or 320) with leather and COMAND in that bracket.

I'm actually surprised at the premium CLKs are getting at the moment. They seem to be doing much better than saloons; more so than a year ago.

FWIW, given these two choices, I'd also take the E over the C any time. :)

Of course, an s-class is what you really should get ;).

Yeah, but that's going to be an older car ('02/'03), and despite what my wife (and my reflection in the mirror) says; I'm not old enough myself yet...

 ;)

A W211 is a superior car in every single way- why pay more for a car thats less practical, less safe and less comfortable. I don't get why people do pay more for coupes myself.

Sit on the fence ***, why don't you:D

I am though not sure I agree with that statement, I would agree that overall the E is probably a better all round package, but if you don't need 4 doors, I would think the CLK is a good option, especially the post facelift ones.

Ah, but even if you don't need 4 doors its better to have them than not too- you can sling your brief case in the back, the doors are smaller and makes getting in and out the car easy (had a 3rd shogun a while ago and its doors were mercilessly long).

What possible advantage does a coupe offer, frameless doors can go wrong (old man has had heaps of trouble with his boxster), the car is less rigid due to a lack of B post, less safe and probably less good to drive, inherently less practical. Arguably they are more stylish, but as a main car, nah, 4 dr wins everytime.

Maybe if there was a CL being dicsussed I might say differently as its like an S class (albiet with the issues as above) but its a class above an E. A 209 is a class below a 211.

2 doors are fine, better proportions and less pipe and slippers, 4 doors are just too, well... practical. ;)

Its all style based and perceived to be youthful, young whatever. I'm 23 and frequently get asked, wouldn't you want a 3dr one. Nah. I had a 3dr car once and found it irksome. If your young your young, if your not your not, a car and the number of doors it has ain't going to change it.

There is one exception for 2dr cars, and that is convertibles, and if the OP wants one of those then it offers numerous advantages (debateable in this climate) that a 211 can't- actually I am wrong, E's have these wonderful full length sunroofs.

Nope proportion has nothing to do with style, a lot to do with mathematics and a bit to do with aesthetics. And I'm neither old nor young anymore but I could never justify running a car on just practical reasoning.

Of course 4 doors are more flexible.:)

Neither do I, but I find 4drs better looking.
