Points Of View Please

What possible advantage does a coupe offer, frameless doors can go wrong (old man has had heaps of trouble with his boxster), the car is less rigid due to a lack of B post, less safe and probably less good to drive, inherently less practical. Arguably they are more stylish, but as a main car, nah, 4 dr wins everytime.

... SACRILEGE...  :D

If I could find a CLK with a 320CDi, and the interior facelift, with leather and COMAND and decent mileage at the right price, then I may well choose that. I like the coupe's looks, and I don't need four doors. I don't even need four seats.

Part of the reason for my original question is because an E-class really is bigger than I need, but if it's the best car for the job, then so be it.

I don't see the point of convertibles, I'm afraid. To put more cats among the pigeons, I'll say this: The air scarf thing on SLs and SLKs is a perfect illustration of the daftness of a convertible in the UK. Take the roof down, put the heater on full, put the seat heater on, and then blow warm air at the back of your neck. Or... Just keep the bl00dy roof on!

In the summer, when the weather is warm, OK. But when you need the heating on, then it's too cold to have the roof down.

Not sure when the 7G was introduced on the W211, I don't think it follows that because it's a V6 diesel it will be 7G.
I also don't think it's relevant for the diesels and the 722.6 is generally more reliable/nicer than early 722.9

Do you have a VIN to check.?

I'm fairly certain that the 7G box came to the W211 on petrol engines first but that it came to diesels with the V6. I think that the only installation of the V6 with the five speed box was (and is) in the Chrysler 300 CRD.

Thanks. I checked the VIN and this does indeed have the 7G. I thought it didn't come about until the facelift for the diesels.

Neither do I, but I find 4drs better looking.

So do I actually..............but its all nothing more than a personal opinion. Thats why there ARE so many car designs out there. Its a good job we dont all like the same thing. Life would become very boring.
Which is why I have never been able to understand the logic behind the reason why some people ask for opinions on the colour of their next car.

Exactly! There is a bit too much of the herd mentality emerging in some of the posts here:

Couldn't agree more. There is a good reason why I wouldn't buy a silver Mercedes even if it were the last one available. ;) :D.

Not even a cubanite one? TBH I can see what you mean, but black is common. I quite like your shade of blue, but haven't seen it on a 211 or newer.

Nope :D.

Quite a bit of black around indeed, but a lot less than dull chrome . I could be tempted into dark green I guess. :D

Whitenemesis saw it in the flesh at the Torquay GTG and quite liked it ;). Don't know if it has ever been available on an e-class.

It hasn't, there is a darker one, tealite blue. I saw an S55 with that colour in John R weir, with cream leather and pale wood. Lovely. I was a poor student @ the time though but I did like it. I've seen a fair few S's with it mind you. Green though, thats rare.

Tealite is a nice colour, but that is a lot darker than what I have. Suits the W211 very well.

Not contemplating downsizing are we?

Exactly :D.

I'll tell you story I heard from my old man who's colleauge (Rory) has german pal with an S500. He went into order the car, and asked what the most popular colour was for this model. The dealer said silver, he said, thats what I will have. He wanted to "conform" and not stick out. Rory said he stuck out in other ways, he barrelled down the Au****ahn @ 150mph (240kmph) overtaking everything in sight with a news paper perched on his lap between the wheel.

Imadoofus I used to do that kind of mileage for many years and having owned the C and the E class, I would say for that mileage you will find the E class better. Safety matters a lot as the more miles you do the greater the risk. Comfort too. Drive a long, long way in the E class and you still arrive pretty unruffled. Drive a long way in the old model C class as I did to the South of France when I arrived I thought my backside was on fire.

Last point. I would somehow bust the bank, beg borrow or steal to get the facelifted E class. It was not just a facelift. More changes were made than are sometimes made on new models. Worth reading this thread (at least the first 9 postings): -

The E class just finished in the top ten on JD Power for 2008.

I'm surprised you haven't suggested the A-class? They are, as you have said, just as roomy as an E-class and very efficient etc, because who needs a bigger car

They have as much legroom front and rear as an E class, which is important to me. But as I have said on another thread, I now have two dogs and only an ML an R class or an E class estate offers the boot space necessary to hold the dogs and shopping or holiday luggage. But sadly it means I have to go back to one car rather than two A's - and get up early to take my wife to work!

But I say again for anyone wanting good space for 4 people and a reasonable boot size, the A class is a great car. We have enjoyed ours to the full including driving to Spain and back in one of them.

B class offers a bigger boot than the A and even more legroom. But still not enough bootspace for two dogs and holiday luggage IMO.

 You're not going to put the dogs and luggage in there at the same time are you??

Not many green cars for at least 2 reasons............
1. Its not a safe colour as it blurs into the background at a distance.
2. Perhaps subconsciously connected with 1, its reckoned to be an "unlucky" colour.

Although I had a green Morris 1100 back in my dim distant youth and it wasn't unlucky for me (!).
