Post your Miles per Tank (overall MPG)

Is the OBD inaccurate?

With my 2.0 petrol Turbo, 193bhp I get:

30mpg average, mixed driving
44mpg at a consistent 50mph
23mpg mid winter, short journeys

I got 70mpg from my 2002 CD220 estate fully loaded with 4 adults (we were on holiday in Scotland). Overall I got 50mpg on that car.

Nerdy, but interesting figures there.

Sometimes I find it interesting that direct injection hasn't lived upto the 20% additional economy promise over indirect injection. Your ZX being a case in point.

I find my E300D gives around 8.6 litres / 100km (33mpg) running around town, 7.8 (36mpg) on a run whilst the 500E has averaged 22.1 over the last 9 years and 100,000 miles with a memorable best of 10.2 litres/100km (27.5mpg) on a 2000km run back from the UK and a worst, pushing along through Italy, of 16.3 litres/100km - 17.2mpg....

W140 S320 (1997)

M111.960 engine if I remember right

Average 10.2mpg now, 60% London driving, 40% motorway (steadily decreasing for some reason, getting a Halfords Fuel Service Plus booked soon as the A/C needs a bit of a clean and they will do both)

E320cdi (6cyl in line)
All to Northern Italy, over 2200 miles return.
2009 - 39.2mpg
2010 - 40.1mpg
2011 - 44.4mpg Post ECU chip (increased power, torque and economy, as promised)

With AirCon on, a heavy load and no concession to economic driving. Whisper quiet at 80plus on most European roads. Town and motorway driving, climbing mountain passes. Better economy than the E220cdis I've had.
I now have a V6 3.0ltr cdi in a CLS and about to do the same journey, somehow doubt it will be as economical.

W124T 2012 overall 26 mpg
C63 2012 overall 22mpg
C63 2011 overall 20mpg
C63 2010 overall 19mpg

Very nerdy - Spreadsheet going back to 1997 with every fill up, bill etc for every car since then.

It's an interesting point however the 406 TD I had and E270 are the best comparison as they were similar driving situations - i.e long trips with work. The 406 averaged 41.7 and the E270 39.5. The 406 was freekin' awful, especially when it decided to shed a con rod on the A1.

E270 of course was a different prospect. It also would have done better MPG as I found out (through this forum) that it had that sticky thermostat problem after I sold it.

ZX though was one of the best cars I owned, even if it did have windey down windows. I guess the figures are down to the fact that it weighed in at slightly more than a packet of crisps and couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding at full throttle. It had great handling though, and because it had no power, it meant driving stopped becoming a competition. It averaged 57MPG overall, mostly town driving. Figures that would be hard to beat with most new metal nowadays.
