Not everyone gets the whole cherished number plate thing.

Yes there are lots of bad number plates out there, yes people bend the rules and try way too hard trying to make something read something it doesn't.

However, if someone wants to spend their hard earned on something like this why should it bother anyone else?

i have a plate on my old dolomite which reads BPR 17T. reg transfers say they can sell it for over £2000.

I don't know the markup that the websites use but I imagine it is around 50%, so an auction house should be a lot cheaper in selling costs.

The DVLA auctions are organised by SMA, but they don't appear to hold number plate auctions for private vendors.

RegTransfers have an online auction facility, and there's always good old eBay (they do generally have a few interesting number amongst the dross).

The only auction I'm aware of other than the DVLA (for previously unissued plates) is the online one that MOCAS mentions.

Best way of selling a plate of that kind of value is to use one of the dealers or to advertise yourself somewhere like the Sunday Times or Autocar. Ebay does seem to work for registrations too, however I'd recommend it for lower value plates (certainly not £15k plus!)

Bear in mind that they're not easy / quick to sell which is why people utilise the services of a cherished number dealer and their advertising potential.
