Probably one of the greatest inventions ever....

In principle where you have a foot operated parking brake like on the E it should be of greater benefit with a manual than an auto for hill starts.

I use it a lot and miss it when I drive a car that doesn't have it.

i hardly ever use the parking break.... :)

I have a manual, and it is a very good and well used feature. Don't know if operation is different to an Auto, but it only holds for half a second or so. Enough time to do a hill start without using the stupid foot brake.

That is "Hill-Start Assist" not SBC Hold

Anyone know if I'll have it on my Feb 2005 E500?

The 7g doesn't hold as well on inclines as my previous 5 speeder boxes in my C43's did.

In which case SBC Hold would be a boon for me

I'd expect so, my car was registered 12-2005 and has it.

The brake hold function.
Just found this and i would put it up there with (allegedly - but thats a whole other thread) putting a man on the moon, Stephensons Rocket, the threshing machine or any other marvel from the last millenium.

Absolutely brilliant feature, can't imagine driving an auto without it! :thumb:

Is there a technical reason why it only seems to be on E class (unless I am mistaken?) Or purely brand marketing?

I think it is great too! :thumb:

Seven,

I'm with you on this one - the brake hold feature was pointed out to me by the sales guy on my test drive and I think it's a great feature in town traffic. You very quickly get used to it and when you switch to another car you really miss it (well I do).

Introduced with SBC on the W211, CLS, and SL.

Continued in the facelift W211 and W212 using a different implementation.

With SBC they also had the soft stop and stop options that were available in some markets and then withdrawn around late 2004/early 2005.

The facility was probably intended to differentiate the E and above from the models below it in the range.

Given how often the topic comes up here it's clear that there is little value in these sorts of options because people don't find them in the owner's manual and they're not standard in other vehicles so they're not expected. Same goes for the old SBC setup . Most owners are probably oblivious to it.

I asked the dealer about this when collecting my car, I was told that the brake and hold function was fitted to the E class but not the C class.

But there is a hold function which allows you to take your foot off of the brake and over to the accelerator, without rolling back on a hill.

Didn't realise the brake-hold was just on the E class. Is it on all E's then ?

I sort of thought it came as part of the auto box options and would be the same on other models too. Silly me ! I guess that would be poor marketing and product delineation ! As you might guess, I'm new to MB, so these things are a bit over my head.

The brake-hold was certainly on a E250CDi auto I tried (I tried this to compare the standstill hesitation to the E350 - E250 seemed a bit longer but that might be just variation between individual cars, rather than the different engine/auto box).
Whatever. I sometimes think mine varies in delay time, but that might be a mental thing - the delay seeming longer inversely proportional to the gap you intend to squirt into !

P.S. Oh, by the way ?
I wonder if the sharp salesman made a point of demonstrating the brake-hols, so that the BE delay on take off wasn't too apparent to a prospective customer ?
It can be a bit unnerving until you get used to it.

P.

But in an auto it wont roll back on a hill anyway. :dk:

Can do depending on transmission mode.

Can roll back in S.

Doesn't in C (aka W).

Although an auto won't roll back / forward in principle, there is an amount of slack in the system and, on a steep hill, a car will lurch back a little (6 inches? I have never measured it) before the auto box hold it.

My W212 will roll back on hills, a lot more than 6" (doesn't have to be that steep either), either in C or S, I love the brake hold function and use it on a regular basis,
