For the avoidance of doubt, Richard on this forum (i.e me) is not Richard of m e r c s e l l e r.

But does that have to be clarified. I'm sure it would be safe to buy a car from you if you were selling any. :D And that seemed to be a general consensus about Richard, all of them. The only problem I could see is that those cars would probably have the steering wheel at the passenger side which must make driving pretty difficult.

You can correct me if wrong, but the issue is that its all hit & miss.. The majority of the time, Richard of mseller relies on the info given to him by the owner of the vehicle. He hasnt scoured around it himself.

To me all my cars are perfect, but i damn well know that not all customers will agree all the time. Everyone sees the same thing from different perspectives and so this is where the whole thing gets a bit pants.

If you use his website as a classifieds to buy like any other then you will be fine.

If you are selling... take some pics and put it on auto trader or ebay yourself and save the comission. Its not difficult.

Hi

Yes, the overall consensus i have on the guy is he does rely on the seller of the vehicle to provide the relevant information and then at least this should be verified between the seller the merc seller - that sounds so stupid lol.. what is Richards purpose again if he is merc seller but not selling anything? maybe merc seller fee collector is more appropriate.

Id love to know what he provides to the buyer for his £350+ fee.

Is his site governed by the supplies of good act?? he advertises, not as a dealer, but as a private individual, and puts alot of information about the car.

My main problem is that he continuly stats dont worry about anything, yet on my viewing with him, the car had bits not working, bits hanging loose, sunroof not working, when he clearly states all is wrking, and sure things go wrong, but this was like offering through his discription a car hat sounded pristine and the equivalent of Fine dining, but ending up with fish and chips.

Though he is very friendly and does go out of his way, i must say, from experience, buy a car the old way, when in doubt, get the good 'ol AA or RAC involved, not just rely on on mans opinion, as good or bad as it may be.

What other good specilist sites are there?

Specifically looking for pristine 1950-1960's cars.

If you're looking for pristine 1950-1960's cars then you should join the official MB Club, the only UK MB club affiliated with & recognised by Mercedes-Benz.
http://www.mercedes-benz-club.co.uk/public/home.htm

Many such cars never get advertised to the general public & change hands amongst Club members.

£35 p.a.

problem is, one mans "excellent condition" is another mans "poor condition". Its all about expectations - and they vary. I come across this on ebay all the time - i now try to limit my use of "excellent", "mint", "as new" etc. I guess its the same for this site.

Thanks

Hi

yes i have been a member with them for some time now..

excellent organisation and very helpful

Malcolm is a wonderful chap (involved with the board)

i guess i must keep looking.

Anyhow, i still dont see the benefit either the buyer or seller get through Merc seller.

i can understand, for example, Charles Ironside, expensive, but he is a dealer, and he has a collection, and some wisdom, and some corporate responsibility.. same goes for Peter Crawley.. these are specialist Dealers.. and nice chaps..

the only prob is Merc seller is not a dealer, but an entrepreneur.. surely there is some regulation governing what he does.. a referral for cash.. its like a cash broker... surely this is not right by the Inland Revenue?

Had any one of his previous buyers got a receipt of payment?

How much did he charge you to as a fee to buy the car.. ie his selling fee?

does he have a flat rate or does his numbers pop out of thin air??

One thing i must say, that i find funny.. is almost all his cars are described as amazing cars. .. statistically, this is just not possible using a standard distribution curve lol..

I really should not have wasted my time!

Chelsea cars have a rather nice collection of cars.. might have to have look there next ;)

What sort of regulation do you think would apply? Seriously? All he does is list some cars on his Website. And charge a fee for bringing buyer+seller together. Nowt wrong with that, it's a private sale and the decision is, as always, the buyer's (caveat emptor).

IMHO, his site is a middle ground between the excruciating prices of Ironside and those other 'premium' dealers and the poorly described and badly photographed tat that's PH's and Ebay's bread and butter.

As for 'right by Inland Revenue', who knows? Just as no-one knows whether the garage-owning members of this forum declare all those cash-in-hand deals. (shrug) Don't let it keep you up at night. :p

I have had my own fair share of issues with Richard of merc seller.

He has alot of cars that i actually like the look of, but his knowledge on the vehicles were limited to say the least and when in discussion mode, answers i knew which i was getting clarity from him ended up him just talking and talking..

its brilliant, the more i listened, the more i realised how much s*** he was full of, so could never deal with some one like that in the future.

Nice work on selling your to the intl buyer.. i guess llike everything, there are good stories and bad ones.

Do your own due diligence - **********

Do your own due diligence on any vehicle being offered by **********. I had a terrible experience which resulted in me losing a great deal of money. Once bitten twice shy. Be sure to do your own full HPI check before transferring any funds to any party. Be warned!!

If you purchase a car , or anything else for that matter through an agent , its fairly obvious that either the buyer or seller ( or both , as in an auction ), are going to pay some kind of a fee. If you do not wish to pay a fee , or are not happy with an agent , just be prepared to put some time and effort into locating a car by yourself.
I recently got a C180k for a friend of mine. Looked at a great amount of adverts , decided on a few parameters such as price, age , colour etc , then whittled it down to a list of five cars . As it turned out , we actually bought the first car that we saw . Not always good practice , but the vehicle was low mileage , FMBSH , virtually unmarked and the price was right . If you are happy to pay a little more for peace of mind , you could do worse than try a couple of dealers that are also forum members .
