Well i finally figured out what the misfire problem was on my 560 SEC! It was
the iginition control module (EZL).

I was still unhappy with the performance and 1 sticky valve later:

And while the heads off i've sent them off to be polished...... Basically i'm having a full top end rebuild and the timing chain replaced.

Anyway, i wasn't really happy with the gearchanges from 4th to 3rd so out with the gearbox too:

And if that wasn't enough i've got hold of an AMG rear diff for it which is currently being rebuilt! Give me a few weeks to have everything put back together and i'll let you know how the projects going.

A few pics of the car from the underneath missing a few things:

My TO DO List:

*Fix passenger seat motor
*Replace the heated seat relay
*Fix the driver's door central locking
*Replace the cooling fan coupling
*Replace the self leveling fluid
*Replace the brake fluid
*Weld the old exhaust (till my new stainless steel one gets fitted)

Don't mess around doing things by halves!.......................wow :D

Well if the car has to be off the road while i do one thing then i rather do everything else at the same time! And the fact i have access to 3 other cars at the moment i'm not in a rush to have it back on the road.

As soon as the mechanics are done and i source an AMG rear bumper (have got the rest) the car will be making a trip to the bodyshop for colour coding.

My SEC never looked like that !!!

Where would the fun be if our cars all looked the same!

May have something to do with the fact you never saw yours minus an engine, gearbox, rear diff, exhaust etc...

sec

Very true, it's going to look great when it's finished. Did you see the article in the Mercedes enthusiast this month,re the SEC ?

Haven't bought this months one yet, will pop out later on and get it.

I could have bought a mint low miler for £10k but whats the point. I don't keep a car standard so if you buy a concours car it will devalue when you mod it. I was better off buying a 100k one with a few probs because that way when i've finished with it i know everythings done properly.

How much power do you think you will get from having the heads polished?

Not sure really, the head was off so i thought might as well do a proper job. Was told to expect a slight increase in BHP, realistically 5% increase if that.

I'm hoping after all the mods inc removing the cat and a free flow exhaust, to have between 340-350 BHP. I've also bought the NGK iridium spark plugs for it.

Finally the heads have gone back on!! AMG cams and lifters have been fitted. Hoping to have the engine back in the car by the end of the weekend.

Just curiosity, but how much of this are you doing hands on yourself?

The car's at George Frasers at the moment. I've spent approx 25 hours+ with George on it. I will be back there tonight to help with the engine fitment and various other bits and bobs.

I can carry out my own services, strip down the engine, and various other bits and bobs myself. But there are certain things you need a ramp and a helping hand for though! I will personally be preparing the car for painting after i finish the engine work.

Hi just reading about your car, should be fantastic, when finished.

You say, you are having the Diff rebuilt. Im thinking of having the Diff on my 500SL rebuilt, can you tell me who you have rebuilding it, and how much to have the work done.

I always like to get recommendations on such specialist work.

Regards Wobbly

Finally the car is back on the road!!!

But as always there are a few problems, the main one being the diff i had reconditioned is still whining!

The front springs have been changed, will change the rear ones over the weekend. I adjusted the rear self levelling to make it sit lower but the springs still make it rest high. The front springs are a 40mm drop and combined with the wheels it looks the part.

Unfortunately i will not be able to put on the complete AMG kit and paint the car before the New Year as the diff has pushed the project back. Will have the exhaust done before christmas though.

Also the gearbox has been modified by George Fraser to have 1st gear start!

Work left on the car:

Fix passenger seat electric switch
Diagnose heated seats malfunction
Change rear springs
Fit new custom exhaust
Fit AMG kit and repaint the car
Remove wood trim and reveneer
Remove mudflaps (cars too low and scrape on normal roads :D )
Fit some decent ICE
Light smoke tint the windows
Clear side repeaters

I hope you can bring it to the Kent GTG. I would love to take a look at it, i had my 560 for four years a true Classic and in pristine condition the only reason i sold it was to make way for the C43. Yours looks great, i like what you have done to it, wheels etc. mine was original.

With regards to the gearbox, i'm not sure what he did. I told him i wanted a quick kickdown and thats how it came back! I was going to question how he did it but was a bit gutted that the diff was still whining. George and myself personally worked on the car for 3 hours last night. the wheel bearings are being changed as well as they sound slightly coarse, hopefully at some point today. The whole rear suspension will have to come out in order to change the springs so thats another big job.

Well if the GTG is in febuary, the project should be completed so i will be coming.

The exhaust is going on the 28th, and i'm trying to get the alarm and sound system fitted next week. Everything depends on how long it takes to have the car running mechanically perfect.
