Anyone had satisfaction applying protection film to a rear bumper?

How does it look after a while? do they discolour or go matt? Would we be better-off with a pre-shaped self-adhesive plastic / aluminium / stainless trim as generally seen on estates?

Wife has ordered a new golf hatch, but judging by the many small scratches and scuffs on the one she has just had for 3 years...I think some sort of protection required as the bumper is just too vulnerable.

The golf bumper has a tricky double radius 'in the corners' if you know what I mean - I have read about a hairdryer to assist softening. Are there two systems of application? One using adhesive, the other using just dilute washing up liquid and the film adheres like a transfer. How skilled is this job:confused:

Any insight from anyone appreciated, I suppose if I have a go and it creases and traps bubbles I can just peel it off, worth a try for less than a tenner?

Are these scratches the result of loading and unloading? If so, there is another option; fold out protector. The benefit of this is that when the rear of the car is dirty (as hatch-backs and estates normally are during inclement weather) is that it extends down to cover the whole bumper, thus protecting trousers/skirts when loading at the same time. Same manufacturers offer them as an accessory but MB didn't for the Vito so I made one.

Between the two options you list, I would go for the pre-formed metal or plastic rather than the film on the grounds that it should be tougher and more able to stand up to wear.

Thanks for your thoughts

Yes I have a tailored boot liner for my estate which folds out over the bumper - I have had them for my previous estate cars so should ask her if she wants that?

She's lazy with curver boxes etc, but surprising how much they can scratch!

I've just looked at the preformed bumper protectors and think I'd be mad to mess about with film on a roll in comparison
