Has anyone here done a evaluation on the various pulley kit upgrades for the CLK 230k W208 ?

I know that Kleemann , Brabus , Carlsson offer one as well as mercedesperformance.co.uk

Thanks.

Try a search, some recent threads on here. Biased towards a w202 C230K, but same engine.

It depends on the year but the best buy out there is ASP (aspracing.com). They sell both the pre-2K and post 2K pulleys for the M111 engine for about $650 US. You also have to be carefull if you have a 2000 motor as it's a different pulley than the pre-2K and post-2K. It would help if you most more details on the car and motor.

It would be interesting to see how much a suitable pulley is from a local belt/transmission supplier.

A good one can supply all manner of different bits and pieces.

It would be pretty expensive to have a pulley duplicated with the damper, what if the rubber they use in the damper fails and it comes apart. That's why all tuners now use a factory pulley and attach a ring to make it bigger. So you are starting off with a part that costs about $325 US and then machining/welding/balancing costs on top of that. How much do you think you would save over buying a pulley that you know will work? BTW: ASP charges about $350 US if you supply the factory pulley.

Its a 2001 CLK 230K. Noticed that some manufaturers (Opera & mercedesperformanced.co.uk , I think) also require a upgraded water pump. What's the deal there ? Is the same as when they refer to a "high performance intercooler" ?

I don't understand why the pulleys would be different betwen pre-2k and post-2k. AFAIK the difference between a pre-2k and a post-2k 230k engine is the airflow, the plastic pipework is different and the MAS is in a different location. When Kleemann do the upgrade it costs about 600 euro more for the pre-2k models, I think this is because they upgrade the car to post-2k spec :)

Last time I checked, Opera Design does not make a pulley for your car, they only do the older M111 motors. You need the pulley for the newer 2.3L motors and ASP is the least expenive route and Brabus is the most expensive. Installation instructions are on my website (www.Buellwinkle.com). All you need is to swap the crank pulley, takes about 1-2 hours depending on how motivated you are. If it's an automatic it's a little more complicated and you'll need an assistant. If it's auto, let me know and I'll send you pics on how to lock the flywheel so you can losen the crank bolt. The reason that a tuner would give you a different waterpump pulley is because they can make the crank pulley slightly larger if they recontour waterpump pulley as the belt would otherwise rub. Some tuners like Carlsson and Renntech give you a larger idler pulley for the same reason, it pushes the belt away from the waterpump pulley. We tested a similar setup where they made the crank pulley slightly larger using this method and it generated another 1/2 PSI of boost but because of the extra friction and heat it didn't generate any more HP, the kompressor is at it's limit, spinning it faster didn't produce better results.

Also, I tried two different intercoolers, both lost about .5-.7 PSI of boost, both lost HP under most conditions. The intercooler is an air/air type and has nothing to do with the waterpump.

Shude, this is a picture of the pre-2K pulley next to the post 2K pulley. The 2K pulley is like the pre-2K pulley with a shorter hub. If it makes you Brits any happier, when I bought a factory pulley to modify, it said made in the UK on the box. I hear this question now and again on the SLK forums. They don't believe me until I post a picture.

Maybe the pulley is slimmer on the 2k+ models to make way for the different plastic pipework :) . I was thinking of buying all the 2k+ pipework so I could upgrade mine but if it turns out that I have to change the pulley as well...

Hi there,

I'm new over here... I have a '99 CLK230K Convertible and I would like to change the crank pulley, althought the sellersman told me that i only could fit a bigger pulley if my stock one had between 16 to 17 cm.
I measured mine stock pulley and the diameter is about 18cm, so can't i fit a bigger pulley?

I don't know if my engine is a M111 or M271, how can I distinguish?

I hope some of you could help me to make my Merc faster...

Best regards,
Pedro
