putting a laptop thru comand screen

May I suggest some sort of IR interface, an IR man receiver for example, a lot of the nice car players and winamp support IR plugins or girder, so control of the system could be from a little IR remote.

here's the remote from my "VAN" pc installation

Here is a list I just pulled from linitx.com:

Travla C134 mini-ITX EPIA M case - black : £92.83
Carnetix CNX-P1260 Power Regulator : £57.58
Carnetix Case Power Cable Kit : £3.29
VIA EPIA ME6000 LVDS Mainboard : £85.78
Kingston 256MB PC2100 266MHz DDR DIMM : £31.15
Fujitsu 60GB 4200 rpm 2.5" drive - MHT2060AT : £75.20
Matrix Orbital MX210 USB : £75.00 (from kustompcs.co.uk)
Wireless network device of some sort (TBA) : £40-50

That's under £500 for an mp3 player with 60GB of storage. Plenty of flexibility on the parts too. If you knock off the price of the cd-changer (which I was going to buy) it almost sounds like a bargain! :)

yeah i plan on fitting one of THESE (or something similar) on the cup holder cover on my clk, only downside it will be on display to theives etc but i doubt it will cause much interest.

Shude- are u thinking of displaying via comand? if so the Epia boards look the best solution (and what i intend to use) as they have built in TV out & audio.

Exactly, that's why I want an Epia "M".

I intend to use a Matrix Orbital display (built into ashtray) to control winamp etc. I plan to create a special winamp skin for use with the tv-out function for an oem look :)

why dont you go thru comand?

i picked up the video adaptor for £125

It's not exactly essential for playing MP3s! The Matrix Orbital display just scrolls the ID3 data and has buttons on it for previous/next etc. I would mount this in the ashtray.

You could put that glidepad in your ashtray too, keeps it hidden. Just as long as no-one tries to put a cigarette out on it, it'll be fine! ;)

what about dvds and games? dvds mainly i suppose....

touchpad; it may be difficult to use when sitting in the drivers seat if it was in the ashtray... seems to be in a good place on the cup holder cover, although this depends on how thin the unit is as if its thicker than 1cm or so the lid wont open properly.

i may opt to fit a numpad & touchpad in the centre armrest so i can navigate safely on the move using cursor keys.

I doubt I'll be watching any DVDs or playing games, although I suppose if I'm waiting in a carpark for someone then it's possible.

I'd like to avoid having basically a keyboard and mouse in the cockpit though! The M-O display with buttons is good enough for winamp and a few other apps.

hehe, that saves me buying a tv tuner card then :)

but for about £500 or so you could have the proper Mb tv tuner & run your pc thru the av inputs to display on comand

I know this should be in classifieds but I happen to have a spare AV adapter for comand that arrived with an ML unit I bought reecntly. offers welcome

How about a Mac Mini, it's 6 1/2" square and 2" including the DVD player/CD burner. Get the optional built in bluetooth adapter and you have wireless mouse/keyboard and whatever. Will fit in the glove compartment without a problem and you can play DVDs movies as a bonus. Pretty nice device.

i would have probably taken you up on that but i have already bought one from eBay.

Nevermind..... much cheaper than the Comand TV tuner.

when i said "no need for a tv card" i meant a PC tv tuner card to go inside the PC (not the comand type)

I'm considering a PC install shortly into my CLK, going to use Comand as a display... I wonder how "possible" it would be to modify the gear stick to have a small track ball built into the top of it!? maybe with the button on the front?

Anything is possible with enough money, but I think that would be alot of work for little gain.
