Quick ncd query

I have an ML350 which has the maximum NCD applied (I have over 17 years without a claim), when I bought my SL500 last November I was told I could not use my NCD against the SL and had to pay the full premium however I am now accruing NCD on the SL so when I renew I will have over 17 years on the ML and 1 year on the SL, hopefully.

A few years back my mate Dave had a normal car policy with a full NCD. He bought a modern classic car as a second car. For the second car on a modern classic policy with no NCD facility he was quoted 400 quid which was not too bad all things considered. But he rang up his original insurance company and they said they would "mirror" the NCD on the original policy giving a quote of £200 for the second car on a completely new standard policy. Which was nice so Dave took this policy out. Fast forward til renewal time - no mention of mirrored NCD just 10 years NCD. So Dave goes to a new insurer with an even cheaper quote with 10 years "Free" NCD !

So Dave is not advocating this route and even though he had a claim a year later nothing was ever found out !!

That depends on the policy.

Some policies allow the named driver to earn NCD as well, some don't (i.e. only the main driver / policy holder earns NCD).

Remember NCD is in 2 parts -
1 - The old insurer issues it
then
2 - It is up to the new insurer whether or not they will accept it.

Also, when getting quotes, some insurers are now asking about previous driving experience - It is possible for somebody with the right driving experience but Nil NCD to get a cheaper quote than somebody with some years NCD.

One of the few benefits of marriage is that Insured+Spouse policies can be cheaper than policy holder insured only.
