Hi folks,

The electric windows on my 1987 SL are really slow. Just wondered, surely they were not this slow in 1987?

What causes this? And can it be rectified?

Look forward to your replies! Thanks.

Dirty contacts in the switches can cause this. Also try some silicone spray on the channels, it might be they're adjusted too tight. The best test is with the doorcards off and apply battery voltage direct to the motor contacts.

Thanks Derek,

I'll give all of the above a go when i next have an hour or so free to myself. (A very rare thing with my two screaming brats in the house)

Thread from the dead...

Well, after my succesful job in this thread...
http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/electronics/133113-hazard-switch-needed-can-you-help.html

I decided to get the window switches out and give them a clean, just incase it's an easy fix.

They were FILTHY inside!

See the backs of the contact points and contact points? not nice at all...

All Cleaned up and ready for re-assembly and re-fit...

Sad / funny / daft / ironic thing is.... it hasnt made the slightest difference!

Guessing that the next idea would be to get the door card off (not that i can't, i Just dont like taking door cards off in general) and giving the motor a full battery blast, directly, as suggested above already.

Have you tried applying some silicone spray on the window channels as previously suggested? It has always improved things for me on a new (to me) car and one application is all that's required. Might cause some smearing on the glass if used too liberally, but nothing normal glass cleaner won't shift.

If the channel is free and all siliconed up, maybe hardened dry grease in the gearboxes, get to them and have a look. If there is a hole in the thing give it some WD40, even better if you can get to the cogs and relube.

It is usually a combination of factors rather than one single thing.

Door card off and inspect/clean would be the way forward.

It's a pilarless convertible, where should I spray the spray? Do u mean inside the door?

Yes inside the door - door cards off and in the channel the glass runs in

Yes as above ^ post.

If you're hesitant in removing door cards, you could first try lowering the window and aim the extension tube at the top of the channel which might just be visible with the glass fully down. Spray enough so any excess finds it's way down. If that improves things slightly, you may want to remove the door cards and do a thorough job.
