The R129 SL55 was a germany only model - very little information available - ~60 made it to production.

Won't fit a V12 though. The 280-500 &SL60 share the same box but the V12 has a different part number.

No, the same engine as a W210 E55.

The 55 was a NA 5.5 - same as the W210 E55.

There was a 6 week waiting list from the stealer when I got a quote - £1200 + VAT for a '99 SL500.

That's why they're rare on eBay and the price is sky rocketing.

The only Merc V12 I'd have would be the one sitting in the Pagani Zonda

Not my experience! Stealership parts dept. said there was no AMG rear box to fit my '97 R129 (SL500). The only one they could find said it was solely for LHD cars

They were probably correct, did your car come from the factory with one? Don't expect the parts people to be creative

Try not to confuse parts from AMG models with accessories branded with AMG logos designed to fit standard cars.

From the AMG accessories brochure:

AMG rear silencer
B6 602 0822 : rectangular, twin, models up to 09/95 : £1417.61
B6 602 0823 : oval, twin, models up to 06/98 : £1400.97
