R170 SLK bonnet will not open.

Today I went to a garage to look at another car. I took my SLK for p/ex.

I tried to open the bonnet but it was stuck and would not budge. I then pulled the release hatch thingy a bit too hard and it snapped. Upon tugging the cable with pliers it wouls not open. This is the first time it wouldnt open since buying it in late Feb.

I have since bought and attached a new bonnet release thingy (the red thing which you pull under the steering wheel). Still does not open.

Can anyone make any suggestions as to what I should do next?

One quote from a fairly local independent said it would be 45 pounds plus VAT just to look at it.
Mercedes in Stockport said it would be a flat 85 pounds to investigate.

Surely there must be a manual way to pop the bonnet so I can check it myself?

Well a good result today saw me take the car to the independent dealer who managed to get it open, then cleaned up the mechanism.

The best thing is that there was no charge for the service.

So a decent result after a run of bad luck with this vehicle.
