R63 AMG - Collecting Cars

Had a close look at the R63 today.

It's at Stevensons Independent | Mercedes Benz Specialist | Maidstone, Kent having all fluids and filters, spark plugs, tyres, new near side rear shock absorber, discs, pads replaced and wheels refurbished. There is also a small oil leak which will be fixed.

it is in lovely condition inside and out. There is one small dent, and that's it. Interior is pretty much as new.

sounds pretty good too.

while at the workshop, folks have already been making offers to buy it 😊

it even has a tow bar, which surprised me as I thought AMGs are never sold with tow bars. The installation is very neat and barely visible so may well be OEM

I was sceptical initially but it is a lot of car for the money.

Why are the sizes of the offers, though? :)

A view shared by most towbar manufacturers and fitters!

Beyond the G-wagen, the only 63s which are type approved for towing are those on the 164, 166 and 167 platforms. The R 63 is based upon the 164 platform.

Do check the data plate on the car to make sure it has type approval for towing (i.e. a maximum gross train weight is given). Otherwise it's illegal to have a tow bar fitted.

Hi everyone - new joiner here. I found this thread (and great forum by the looks of it) searching the web for "r63 collecting cars".

Congrats to the new owner - a really nice example. Many of the others in RHD are way over 100k miles by now and a few have had a hard life.

I realise I'm late to this thread, but wanted to add one thing which I don't think has been mentioned so far - this same car was on Auto Trader about 3 years ago for £35,000. The seller at the time was a really nice bloke, but he wasn't for moving on the price when I saw it. He eventually sold it though, presumably to whoever recently put it on Collecting Cars.

Maybe this adds a bit of colour on where the reserve was, or what they were hoping for in the auction. Looks like they negotiated to somewhere in the middle in the end and hopefully everyone's broadly happy.

Either way, interesting to see a RHD one come up at public auction for once and test the UK market properly.

finally got it out for a proper drive today

It has a fabulous engine, and handles and corners well, despite its length, size and weight.

I was surprised how it hangs on in the corners, and quite flat too. Heavy steering with decent feel. Chassis a bit flexi as so long .. it’s the LWB R

the 6.3 NA V8 makes a truly wonderful noise, subtle yet very much present 😍

the rear most windows pop out and retract electrically 💥

What does your neighbour think of his car, one year on, and what is he actually using it for?

Big family, long distance holidays, airport runs, luxurious shopping trolley, posh “transit” / support car for a hobby?

On the first day of the School holidays, ideal for the Calais booze run, I guess.

It has mostly sat around .. done less than 1k miles in a year.
