rear diff noisy on e220 cdi-some advice please

hi everyone,
i have a v reg merc 220 cdi automatic with 180k miles.rear diff started to make some noise 8,9 months ago.i ve changed the diff oil 2 months ago still the same.last week started to be louder an i took the car to an engineer,he quoted me 600 pounds+vat to remove,recondition and put back with new bearings and 170pounds+vat to change oil/filter in gearbox because never been changed.
Is it a fair price?
Can i drive the car as it is?
Is it dangerous at high speed?

If I were you I'd find a used diff, expect to pay not more than £300 including fitting.

Just make sure yoy get one with the correct ratios.
