Rear Fogs

I think youre missing the point, if you are a following a car in the fog, at a sensible distance, if that car has two fog lights illuminated it could make the brake lights less visible when the brakes are apllied. Nothing to do with tailgating!!

That is the exact reason why Mercedes chose to use one rear fog lamp as opposed to two.

My BMW has two, FWIW !
Two foglamps but no indicators, someone needs to get their priorities right at BMW! ;)

You fitted 'em yet? Gotta be mod no.1 surely? :)

Don't see how they could rear end you if they thought they were brake lights ..... if they were slowing down, and you were maintaining the same speed, there would be little chance of a collision !

When two fog lights are on, it is difficult to tell if the brake lights have been applied. I.E. you cant see the brake lights for the glare of fog lights.

This means it you are creating a situation where the likelihood of being rear ended in infinately higher even though you are perhaps slightly more visible.

AFAIK MB have always fitted just the one fog light, as a kid I remember the W123 only having the one rear fog light. The saloon had it integrated into the rear lamp cluster whereas the estate had a separate bolt on lamp/housing.

Agree, however i have a huuuuuge long high level LED brake light on the roof, which only illuminates when the brakes are applied - surely this distinguishes the brakes. Not sure if this has become a compulsory requirement as well these days - can't think of many cars that don't have them.

I only ever really use mine to p*** off the 'garys' who insist on driving up behind me with their front fogs on even when its not foggy because max power insist it makes them look cool.

I can dip my mirror to get away from their front foglight glare but they have to sit there in my bright red glow ...

childish, i know , but thats just me ....... :o

I'm glad to see it's not just me who's childish :D

When I was travelling around Europe I noticed some lorries had flashing rear brake lights. This I thought a good thing, they really stand out. Any other opinion on such things?

the worst thing ever to happen to cars was when they moved the orange warning light that let you know your rear fog lights were on from the main consul to the light switch. I think all cars should have the same system as our Mercs where the fog lights are automatically turned off when you turn your lights off.

And why do people turn their fog lights on in the rain

I really hate it when people have two fogs... it disguises whether or not they have brake lights on and is IMO dangerous.
Don't agree with you there, brake lights on nearly all cars nowadays a far enough away from the rear fog lights for you to be able to distinguish between the two, and anyone who piles into the back of a car due to above is just not paying attention. And theres always then 3rd high level brake light too. There should be no confusion between the two sets of lights

slightly OT but concerning lights of a kind ....

I managed to drive from Hampton to Teddington (2 and a bit miles) while following a e270 cdi (03 reg) , i could see the drivers head (flat cap) and his passengers head (blue rinse), anyway i pulled out of my house and tucked in behind him and he drove the whole way with his offside indicator on !!!!

God knows how far he had driven already with it on before i had the misfortune to pull in behind him. Do these people never look at their dash and wonder what the green flashing light means ? or hear the clicking ? i doubt that they had their stereo up too loud to hear it - Val Doonican can't sing that loud !!

Anyway - rant over - back to work !

Definitely! All it takes is a bit of fog and there are rear foglights on for about a week because people don't turn them off!

Paying attention or not I'd still like to reduce the risk of being driven into.

People still drive about in the fog (and at night!) with no lights on at all! They are the ones I really worry about.
