Ok im baffled with this one .... my w220 has 149k miles on and drives wonderfully except there is a "pattering" from the rear almost a "thumping" over light bumps ... as if the rear shock has gone - my garage cannot find anything obvious - anyone had the same problem??

When you are on a straight, flat road, try and dab on and off the accelerator and see if you can feel a thumping on the rear end.

I had a similar problem with my W220 and it turned out to be the rear axle, but you had to jerk the car to feel it.

I was thinking it may be the axle shaft, because I feel I may have the same problem starting.

There are two joints in each axle and if you were to experience the situation where one of them on one was seized solid, what effect would you get ?

Draw a picture looking towards the rear of the car at bumper level.

Are the axle shafts at an angle, between diff at one end of the shaft, and the wheel hub at the other end.

Imagine effect if say outer joint is seized on one axle as car moves along over bumps..

The shaft would snap straight away.

Rear control arm.

Does the car squirm under extreme acceleration ?

Rear subframe mounts two in front of wheels two at rear of wheels

I know we have heard of drive shafts snapping on here due to rust inside joint, but wouldn't it depend on how far out from level the shaft was ie. how high or low the suspension is determines this.
