This may be a silly Q so I apologise in advance -- BUT can one have a rear view camera for parking playing thru Comand ?

Just a thought......

I enquired about this too. COMAND has a video input so in theory yes you can. But the C class doesn't have the facility in the rear panel to mount the camera. You would have to cut your own hole or devise another way to mount it

If you have a TV it will plug into the AUX, other than that it depends on the year of the Command
on the Command 2-2.5 it would work with one of Hughs interfaces if no TV

The Camera mounts just above the number plate and is tiny

On your car yes but its not a cheap option as the camera itself is quite dear. We are looking into alternative suppliers for the camera component. Whether you have the desired fitting above the rear numberplate would require some investigation but if not, I'm sure something could be worked out.

Xvision make a nice little camera that measures 36 x36 x 24mm and it can see out of a 2mm hole, making it possible to mount the camera in the boot. Night vision is good going down to 0.3 lux. you do not need better than this as the car has reversing lamps. Price £28 + vat

I recently bought a nightvision camera off ebay for roughly £30 including VAT. It has been drilled on the lower bumper (below the number plate). I do not have COMAND but have attached it to my pioneer screen.

It is pretty useful as it shows any low lying objects undetected by the rear view mirror

I can only agree with you there, when I drove my friends 221 with the feature you could reverse happily seeing for quite a way

464.10 € as a factory option for the W221 in Germany. £30 sounds OK for an after market option :)

The dynamic lines make the comparison a bit unfair though.

I think this is a great idea but would the VIM interlock obviate its use?

It was you the other day that got me thinking :) I have no idea if it could be used when going forward (handy) the TV cuts very early when driving forward.

On my car and the SLK when you fit the "roof closing in motion" chip, that changes the blanking point with the speed signal

When we had the GL420CDI it had this as an optional extra so it follows that it must be able to be retro-fitted but at what cost?

Is it an aid or gimmick for a car?

Regards
John

The cam's not actually that complex, not saying a retrofit would be cheap but i can think of more expensive things to install.

Its handy to see whats going on but i never bother to use the lines, prefer the Mk1 eyeball to judge for myself.

Only thing with those is the navi wont dead-reckon

I wasn't thinking of whilst going forward, although my video camera did work going forward until the hookup to a Star machine activated the VIM interlock. Can I assume that the interlock doesn't work in reverse?

We have retrofitted a reversing camera to an 07 ML with comand. It works very well indeed.

We (as Alfie says) did a ML retrofit a couple of weeks ago.

It consists of
a) dismantle rear door panel work, left and right hand trunk upper and lower panel work, drop roof liner by 4 inches at the rear.
b) put new loom & camera in rear door, remove old one, and hook up above roof lining
c) Install new loom that goes from back left to front of car, and to fusebox on back right hand side. If you have TV it doesnt go to the front, just to TV tuner, but still power comes from the fusebox
d) Install the power supply for camera

Now with (c), you can do it as per factory, which involves removing the carpet (from in front of front seat backwards) - this means taking out the centre console, front seats and rear seat bases, door sills and lower pillar covers out - This lets you at the wiring ducts. I can do that (out and in again) in 3 hours assuming no hitches - but there always are. Plus its a good hour to do the rear door as you have to extract all the 14 clips that break , and cut your hands up on the sharp metal.

Although, if just installing the camera, I'd run the cable under the back seat instead of in the wiring duct, and the video cable up under the carpet on the left hand side - it will come to no harm there, and save 2 hours.

We did the whole lot out job, as also installed TV, reversing camera, full factory type rear seat entertainment system, linguatronic, had the car re-trimmed in the AMG nappa leather (still need to get the bigger front seat bolsters, on back order). The CD changer and iPod install is documented on www.mercupgrades.com - i'll try and dig out some pictures of a stripped out ML at some point and post them.

ps, interestingly, to change the battery you have to take out the front seat and cut the carpet !! (or do most of what I said above) - lots of expense for ML/GL owners in 5 years time.

The reversing camera is a £360 option; I get the feeling that a retro fit might be slightly more expensive  :D

Yes, it seems that on ML/GL if you retrofit most stuff its 2->2.5 times more than the original factory (inc labour). I suspect same is true for new S/CL/C class
The reasons for this are
a) So much of the wiring is specific to the options, so you are throwing away an £75 loom and replacing it with an £77 loom with 4 extra wires in it - or even worse in the case of folding mirrors, an ~£150 switch with an ~£150 switch with an extra button
b) It is now significantly more difficult to get at the wiring ducts then it used to be (i.e lots more out) - so the solution is to do everything at the same time. - Even the odd 'documented' Mercedes retrofit tells the dealers to run the wires in 'non factory' routes so that the carpets dont need to come out
c) More and more of the car needs coding for retrofits, and that more and more needs genuine Star Diagnosis machine with SCN coding access - and they cost a packet.

(a) and (b) isnt true with COMAND/iPod etc, which are only 'front end' jobs
