Recommend a car for this lady please.

Get a Golf GTD 60+ MPG on a run and good to live with everyday. Its basically the diesel Gti. Another one to consider is a BMW 123d very quick cars and good to drive but quite small. For long distance driving you want something that does 55+ MPG not mid 40's like most of the larger exec saloons.

As some one who drives way too many miles, I'd say that you want comfort first and foremost with acceptable economy. I have had Golf GT TDi and (loaner) 1 series before and can say that I wouldnt want to be doing a 100 miles a day commute in either....

I also wouldnt want to do it in an Alfa - had a 156 JTD 20v at one stage and did 14k miles in 6 months, it was reliable and the engine was great though not that economical, and it looked fab - it just didnt drive very well!
