Refurbishing headlight lense...is it possible

Excellent work!
I need to look at mine, though they're nowhere near as bad as yours were, they could to with brightening up a bit. Is it possible to get similar results without rotary polisher, just by hand? Would that require different products?

Just a lot of elbow grease!

Would be better to work up from 2000 to 3000 grit wet and dry aswell to make it easier to remove the sanding marks. Can buy them in 25packs or single sheets.

Theres hundreds of polishes you could use, the 3M ones are designed for machine use but you can use them for hand work too.

You can get 250ml of all three 3M polishes here...

You just need a medium to coarse polish to remove the sanding marks, then a finer polish to give it the shine and remove and fine rubbing marks caused from the coarser polish.

Along with some soapy water, a polishing pad, 2 cloths, a few hours time and a can of spinach for breakfast, thats all you should need. :)

Just done my ML headlights, the plastic lenses were very grey and faded after 10 yrs of uv, i used 2000 wet and dry with plenty of water by hand and then i used a machine polisher with course brazing paste and i finally finished off with polish (machine finished) and they look like new again! less than half an hour in total.

Just make sure you mask evrything in site twice and you really cant go wrong.

What tape do you use for masking? Errr, what I mean is - normal household masking tape would be an obvious choice, but is it actually the correct one?

Has anyone done this without removing the headlights from the car? Or is that too dangerous - re potentially scratching surrounding paintwork.

Its easy to do without bumper removal. As Jaymenek says its the blue masking tape by 3M that is best. I would advise going over everything twice and using layers of paper to cover the exposed bumper area.

Something like this but I would mask off more than that to be extra safe.

I did mine in situ, no problems re catching the bodywork........Just sanded by hand and buffed with a machine.

Hello all, I am a new to this club. Super to have all this information. I just bought a W211 270CDI and I must admit I'm in love with this car. I have the same problem, one of my headlights is yellowish but the other one looks brand new and I cannot get it off my mind! However I'm scared to do anything because I checked with the dealer and a new unit is £1000. Needless to say I had to change my underwear after that!
Has anyone tried this 3M kit? I am reluctant to use sandpaper.
Thank in advance for your help!
