Remote only operating doors - not ignition.

I have the IR key fob for my W210. Point it at the door and it unlocks, locks and opens the boot lid. However, try it in the ignition and nothing. It is the spare key so it's not an emergency - just wondered if it's a stealer re-program job or if there's a key press sequence...

A stupid question (from me), but the cut key is the right cut? It will turn in the locks? It is just that after turning the key doesn't start the car?

I believe the keys contain a chip which has to be 'mapped' to your ignition.
You should be able to 'reprogram' your keys chip to work with the ignition, but I can't remember how.Try a search on the forum as this question has been asked before.
If you find it post the link and any other questions you have.

Good luck

How often have you used the spare key?

I was told by a stealership that the spare counts the number of times you use it, deactivates after about 1~2 thousand :(

oops just read that it has IR, well that happened to my primary FOB when it fell. It has an inductor around the IR so perhaps the IR transmitter or the inductor is broken :o If so, don't go to an electrician to repair it for 30 quids, order the real deal for 130 ;)
