Sorry if this is in the wrong section, but it's the nearest I could see.

Does anyone have a good method of removing number plates that have been attached using those two sided sticky pads? I have had a good pull on the plates and they are stuck solid.

My registration change has arrived and I need to get the old plates off and I don't want to damage the paintwork.
Any ideas appreciated:thumb:

I have not had to remove any registration plates, however, I have removed several factory fitted letters etc from the rear and sides. It is best if the plates/adhesive is warm. Insert a length of fishing line or similar behind the plates and use a sawing motion. Should remove them no problem. Use a hair dryer to warm the plates up.

I used tooth flossing thread which was perfect as I didnt have finishing line.

I used a hot air gun and heated the number plate, starting at one end heat the number plate a section at a time and the sticky pads will release and then pull the number plate away.

Continue until you have removed the number plate, then you will need to clean up the area where the pads have been. I used a cloth and some white spirit rubbed onto the left overs to loosen it up and a club card to scrape it off.

i use a flexible filling knife dipped in white spirit, push it from the top if possible and apply light pressure and keep the knife wet with white spirit, if no filling knife use the wifes cooking thing

Good luck with the hospital food after using the wife's cooking thing
last time I borrowed cooking utensils' for the car it was sofa time for a week

+1 - steady with the hairdryer!!

you didn't clean the thingy at all by the sound of it :-) ooooh

Got my new private plate number from DVLA yesterday. Used dental floss to remove old plate, took less than a minute. Got my new Merc seat belt pads and new chrome V8 badge. Now I'm gonna get me an orbital polisher... spoilt for choice with them - any suggestions?

Flex but not cheap
