Replacement Tyres - Michelin Pilot Sport 4S or ?

Yes it’s almost inconceivable, I’ve had continental MO’s on mine for 3 years without a problem, it’s only a low powered E250 though.
Hi , Although my car is an E400 I drive it slowly.

Inconceivable or not these tyres are breaking / cracking up at a low mileage.

The tyres are excellent for grip in both dry and wet conditions

I would suggest that any users keep a careful eye on the tyre condition.

I check the tyre pressure monthly at run the tyres at 35psi

Hi , sorry about delay responding to tyre problems.

The tyres were brand new according to the date stamp on the tyres.

Rear - They are cracking up at the root of the tyre as happen previously.

Front - There appears to be a small plug in the tyre on the FNS and the ONS appears to be satisfactory.

I cannot be bothered to go back to Conti again
I don't understand, new tyres fitted 3000 miles ago, probably less than a year old, rears are cracking again, fronts are OK but one has had a puncture repair without you knowing ?

Hi , I fully understand your comments but you have got me thinking regarding the the front NSF tyre. The car was at my local Audi specialist who kept the car overnight because the engine oil change took a little longer than they thought.

When I get back to the UK I will have all the tyres inspected.

I will report back the finding to the Forum.

Thank you for jogging my memory.

Poop - cant find any Michelin P4S in the rear size ( 285/30/19) available at tyre fitters or with Blackcircles
Did you manage to find any Michelin PS4S? I’m trying to find a replacement for my P Zeros on my S212 e63 and have the same tyre size as you but not had any luck. Main issues with my PZeros I found were a lack of grip on the wet and very noisy but reading some of the other posts in this thread I don’t know how much better the MPS4S are going to be for noise…

I’ve also been looking. Apparently a 295/30/19 will also fit my SL without problems so, I may opt for them. I don’t use my car much so not is a desperate hurry (18,000 miles in 5.5. years).

Agree with P Zeros being noisy but not lack of grip in the wet, just how fast did you want to go in the wet ? Shouldn’t you be driving to what conditions allow to be safe. I can’t see why you would want to be faster than anybody else in poor conditions ;)

Not r

Not that fast, ~30mph on an on ramp joining motorway and giving it 50% throttle :p

Is 295/30 better or is the same width but higher profile better eg 285/35 so a similar profile to the fronts?

A single tyre can’t be the best on every scale, there will always be a compromise. High performance tyres tend to be noisier than comfort orientated tyres.

If noise is important then try a comfort orientated tyre, but the compromise will still exist, it will just be a different characteristic which is compromised.

Agreed I just thought the michelin PS4S was 1-2db quieter than the Pirelli’s. Anything would help but I won’t compromise on performance to the extent of getting a comfort tyre.

I am about to change all four tyres on my W205. My last MOT had two advisories, cracking on one rear tyre and one front tyre. The tyres at the moment are Nexen N'Fera SU1's. Before we all have a good laugh these were factory fit and the car has now done 18,600 miles and there is still 5mm tread depth. Obviously age has got the better of them. To be fair they have done all what I have wanted them to do and done it well and they are surprisingly quiet. My only complaint is there there is very little Alloy Wheel protection against kerb rash.

My first thought was to replace them with another set of Nexen's because they have been so good. Now, I am not a boy racer by any means and was wondering what is the best tyre to replace them with. I am thinking either Michelin Pilot Sport or continental Contisportcontact but of course they are more expensive. What do you think ? :)

Hi, I have changed recently from GY Assy3 RF, to PS4s NRF, comparing the two, ps4s are noisier then the GY, that is probably due to GY having foam insulation, and PS4s being a UUHP.

Also GY had a bigger rim protections to the PS4s, although that didn’t prevent alloy kerb damage,😡.

Overall opinion on PS4s, is yes they have excellent grip, and so they should being a new tyre, haven’t driven them in the wet yet, so can’t yet give an opinion as only had them for a few weeks.

Hoping they wear well.

I’m not very clued on tyres but 295 vs 285 is 10mm wider (so only 5 mm on each side) . Some of the R231 SL guys on the American forum use them without problems!

30% of 285 is 85.5mm (sidewall depth)
30% of 295 is 88.5mm so insignificant difference.

My fronts are 255/35/19

For the performance, the compromise is small. Although for those who never use the performance - or are reassured that it’s there if required - then the compromise of more noise (all the time) may be too great.

Well the wear is average & ageing is not that good. I’ve done the same mileage in 5.5 years and the condition of the tyres are good with about 3mm average tread remaining . I drive my car hard and it has also done several fast laps around a racing circuit, 120 to 0 mph braking and swerving exercises as well as 155mph a few times in Germany.

The problem is they only make UUHP tyres in that size and I don’t need UUHP.

Fuel consumption & wear are terrible, noise not too bad and grip way better than what I really need.

Which sizes are they from factory?

And what tyre are you running Rory ?
