Replacing tyres on a lease car

Regarding part worns, I don’t buy them normally, but when I bought my current car they had Goodyear 20s run flat, 7mm all round, so in my mind was considering changing to non run flats when the time came, 7 months ago front near side had a inner tear showing cords, so I had a decision to make, the other tyres still had 5mm, so didn’t make sense to change all to NRF, so made a decision rather then spending big bucks for new, would buy part worn, same brand, with similar thread depth to what I have, searched on eBay, and found one, checked the pictures properly, and bought, when it arrived I was happy with condition, asked my tyre fitter whom I know well, to give it a once over before fitting, and would only let him fit, if he was happy to do so.

He was happy with the tyre, so he fitted it, now 7 months down the line, no problem with the tyre whatsoever.

But as DSM1000 has said, there is always a risk with part worns, so one has to thread carefully, you or someone more qualified has to check them over before fitting, and preferably not the the person you buy it from.

Having said all that, many don’t have a problem with fitting part worns.

Don't know what lease co you are dealing with but a lot of them wont accept Hankook as a premium tyre even if its fitted from new from the factory.
My Sportage had Hankooks from new , Arval will only let me fit Mitchelin or similar , its now had 4 PS4's.
VW leasing were the same on my old Skud Superb and Passat CC , Hankooks were a no..no
Good luck
If they were supplied on the car as delivered by the manufacturer then they have to be acceptable as OE Fitment.

Get 4 remoulds popped on. At least they’ll all give the same degree of trepidation.

Haven’t heard the term remoulds for a long time😀, so they are still sold then, do they carry the same risks as part worns.

Hehe. Don’t know matey. Doubt it. I just remember my old man getting them on our shed of a cortina as it was all he could afford. He kept us safe though. Never went on the motorway. 😊

Tyres are covered in my maintenance package on the Sportage so not fussed that they stipulate Michelin etc , Arval will not allow you to fit what they class as non premium brands and that includes Hankook , I tried to get Hankooks fitted to my CC with VW leasing before it had to go back and they had none of it , it didn't have the maintenance package in the lease , Mitchelins/Pirelli/Cont etc is what they specified

I don't understand the question, you have already had nearly three years out of the tyres. The tyres wore as they did because of your driving style and now you want to tuck the lease company with a couple of part worns that could turn out dangerous. :(

I spent many years of my working life as Fleet Disposals Manager for a major Vehicle Contract Hire Company dealing with this kind of thing and believe me they will study that car closely when the car is returned to them. Any thing that is not in a condition that is commensurate with the age and mileage WILL be re-charged :)

Is there anything that specifies what they mean by Premium? Because generally, in the tyre community, Hankooks are considered as Mid-range tyres. The Premium tyres are generally Michelin, Goodyear, Dunlop, Continental, Pirelli and Bridgestone.

Strange... what if your mileage is low and the car is still on the original set of tyres when it goes back to them (which presumablywill be the case for quite a few cars leased just beforeCOVID-19 started)? It will be odd if they insist that you replace the 4 original tyres even if the thread is still good, just because the car was supplied with Hankook.

l just don’t get the part worn thing 🤔
Fortunately only once in my driving life, a number of years back I had a front n/s tyre let go on the M1 at high speed.
I’d not had the car that long, and after that incredibly nasty, brown trousers moment, any vehicle that I buy now, I’ll change tyres for new. Costs a few quid, but with the miles I travel and the way I drive, it’s the only way I feel completely safe. It’s more important to me than anything else on the car.

Exactly. If it’s oe from the factory it’s acceptable. Our SQ7 came with Hankooks on it and we’ve replaced with the same. Nothing wrong with them. In fact I’ve just put a set on the Cclass too.Very well priced too.

I'm sure you could argue the case in this scenario .
Mine still has the original Hankooks on the rear @77k miles and 2 1/2 yrs , they have about 2.5mm on them , Arval will only change less than 2mm.
The fronts lasted 55k , first set of PS4's on the front 20k ,then they fitted another set of PS4's .. would have made more financial sense to fit another set of Hankooks.. :dk:
Just had a look on the Arval site , maintenance package includes "premium tyres" .. maybe thats why

Put the boot on the other foot
If you bought a 3 year old car with mis match tyre's would you change them or run it as is .
I know what id do infact I wouldn't buy a car with mis match tyre's fitted
I’ve just done exactly that, I bought a car yesterday with 3 different cheap brands of tyre, I did raise it but the dealer just said the tread was good on them all. For me it wasn’t a deal breaker in all honesty, but I will definitely get them changed ASAP. I guess it all comes down to if you are happy/can afford to be putting right someone else’s cost cutting.

I don't think I would have bought that car, doesn't say much for the previous owners maintenance standards, what else has been skimped on. You are a brave man :)

… and if the dealer fitted 4 brand new Hankooks and stick £500 on the price would you think otherwise ?

That did occur to me tbh, but I don’t know if the garage changed one of them because it looked brand new, so it might only have had two cheap brands beforehand 😆

Well you wouldn't know then would you, but to leave three different brands on is a bit obvious

Tbh if I’d walked away from a nice car with the perfect spec and at a good price because of rubbish tyres, I think I would kick myself, and if anything it gives me a good reason with the Mrs to buy four nice new ones of my own choice, rather than living with tyres which fitted someone else’s budget 👍🏻

Could have been an ex lease car, where prior to handing back, the leaser put those tyres on,😉, or previous owner who knew he would PX his car, and tyres needed changing, put any used he could find, doesn’t necessarily mean previous owner skimped on other stuff, appreciate people would have concerns about it, but apart from the wheels if everything else stacked up, why walk away from the deal.

Me personally would want to have tyres which were on the car from the factory, so would try and negotiate near enough what it would cost to replace.

OP. You will be driving this car for another 6 months , three of which are 'winter months' . I realise depending on where you live in the UK and how many miles you might have to drive 'winter' is a relative term.

But stop Frucking about and just buy some decent tyres. at the end of the day it's just a hundred and something horsepower shopping trolley of a car.
