Reprogramming W208 keys

I wonder how the heck Lockking got his two keys working so easily then.......?? Maybe a difference between w208 and w209 keys??

You have a point that I remember thinking why mine did not work may of been down to different years and models etc. But it still a DAS3 spec system that these keys use, so they should all be the same.
If I was Lockking and his did work by swapping just one chip then why isn't he knocking these out by the dozen, given the demand ?
I have only seen one PCB type with the older smartkeys and the immobiliser chip is always a 28 pin SO DIL chip. The new chrome key uses a 28 pin QFP version.

thanks for the update paul, i was wondering what your conclusion would be. so the second chip IS for the drive authorisation. funny that your key didn't start the car without the batteries, i have tried a few now and they all did...

They definitely draw power from the EIS for the DAS.

that is quite true, that is what the coil is for. my comment was prompted because wardpaa was unable to turn his key without the batteries. incidentaly wardpaa knows his stuff and no mistake, i have seen his chip swap and very neat it was.

My mistake at the time Alex as I was thinking of the new key which never worked in the EIS - batteries or not - even though EIS was generating a healthy voltage. My old cracked keys work fine no batteries, In fact the transponder coil generates a healthy 5V when energised by the EIS, batteries are only needed when buttons are pressed.
I looking at getting an adapter made up that converts the old style SODIP to the new style QFP immobiliser chip, but there is so little room in the new chrome key on the button side of the board for it to fit, plus the cost, reliability of IC sockets etc..
To coin a phrase; 'Bugger' !

makes you wonder if the different chip dimensions are progress or deliberate anti tamper measures. i understand the IR function of the das is separate to the remote locking IR function. does this mean the remote locking and das functions are entirely separated, or do they share any components on the board? i did find some very interesting stuff on wis about it all, will show you the pages next time you come back with a starting fault :D.

Definitely seems that way. Measured the area of the immobiliser chip earlier and they have shrunk it by less than half. There is no way you can get an adapter in there either, as the height of the chip is only just lower than the body of the switches ! So you would not be able to slide the PCB into the case if it was higher.
Game over.

Hi all, been away for the last month having a rest. My keys are still working fine so what Wardpaa said about 208 & 209 could be the problem.

Sorry, I should have said Horse.

Hi Lockking, If you only needed to swap the one chip then its the only remaining factor I can think of.
hope you had a good break by the way.

Thanks Wardpaa, had a great break. Sorry your key didn't work. Must be the model difference.

I have a W203, im guessing i will have same issues as the W209.....Although i will still give it a go...'In for a penny' and all that....:D

Hi Horse, be interesting to find out. Don't know if it would make a difference but thinking back when I had the first key swopped I used the other key to open the car then started it with the rechipped key then opened and closed the doors & boot and likewise withe the second rechipped key. Opened the car with the first rechip key. Just a thought.

I will give it a go......Can you suggest anyone to do the chip swap in Surrey?? Cheers....

I can but is it OK to put his details on.He'sabout it. But remember he'll swop the chips but if it doesn't work it's not down to the swop. he's not doing any research into it just swoping the chip.

Yes thats no problem, as long as he can swap back if it fails!! Can you PM me the details maybe?? How much does he charge?? Cheers...

hello all. i was told about a synching method by the senior diagnostic guy at one of the local MB main dealers recently. this applies to some versions of eis where the key and module are out of synch...apparently.

insert key. press and hold lock button for 5 seconds. then immediately press unlock button 5 times. then hopefully turn/start engine/smile/let us know. it is a long shot but just possibly worth it.

And the answer (after five pages) is ???

The original question was posted, I assume, to find out if it was possible to have a 3 button key 'programmed' and if so where ?

Okay, now I know it CAN be done but can someone please tell me

  • Who can do the work?
  • How much will it cost?
  • What are there contact details?
Thank you in advance.

you are talking about re-programming a key to a different car? this is only possible by swapping the chips, or possibly by reflashing the chip/s with a key programmer such as the ak400, although no-one here has experience of the latter.
