Well spotted Howard.

That looks good. The darker centre really works.

What about steels with darker centres?

Sorry - but I don't like the darker rims at all. The shiny rim edge looks a bit like those LED rims - very chavvy - imho.

The alloys themselves look OK - but so do the steels ;)

:) I think we might have differing opinions on what looks acceptable for specific vehicles. :o I think having a coloured centre might look acceptable, but getting the centre colour right is more than critical. In my own fuddy, duddy opinion having an extra colour just does not look right. I am of the opinion that the current wheels are beyond viable repair? I say this because there is one layer of steel resting upon another layer. I cannot envisage how any type of sandblasting could remove the rust that has now developed between these layers? If I buy replacement steel wheels, then these would have to be treated immediately to avoid this long term problem and to that end I will make enquiries about costs of powder coating, but if this is too expensive, then it will be alloys.

I appreciate the excellent work Unit504 is doing and it is hugely beneficial in helping with the decision process. Howard's suggestion might look very nice but I have never been a fan of wheels with those bolts\stud thingies, are they called split rims?

Having the centres painted is a consideration which I have not ruled out, but my tastes are the deciding factor:o although I always take into account what other folks think. The new colour of the vehicle is most impressive and I want everything else that is done to also be a credit to it's new look.

John

Guys, I doubt John is going to want low-profile tyres ... his Sprinter is presumably on 15" or 16" rims at present. Bear that in mind when Photoshopping ... in the pic. I did I resized the alloys to be the same diameter as the existing steel wheels.

Anything else is going to look misleading, IMO.

I appreciate your thoughts and especially the great efforts being made by EVERYONE to help resolve this issue. We all have different tastes and thankfully we all respect that. By posting pictures of all the different options I can get a much better picture and hopefully my comments are being treated in the same way.

BTB is spot on regarding low profile wheels and also the size of wheels. Strangely enough I think a dull chrome original steel wheel might look acceptable, but it goes against everything I feel about chrome wheels

No amount of waxing on new steels will avoid this specific corrossion, it is eminating from between two layers of the steel, so that must be a consideration?

I'm wondering if we should start a new thread on the wheels and tyre section?

Thanks again for all the excellent nominations, I appreciate every last one of them.

Yours sincerely
John

Keep the thread here. Most fun for years.

John, trouble now is the rust. Had that not been there, steel would be fine as many have said. But it is there. And you have just had your pride and joy resprayed and now, looking lovely, you want the wheels to pass muster too.

AMG's and split rims, perhaps with a pair of Foster Grant shades and a parrot haircut, and even some really tight, faded blue jeans, might look 'daddy cool' but I don't see it suiting either your image or the limo's.

Given that you have to lob out some loot to get the wheels up to scratch, you might as well go for the alloys. Look better, posher, classier, more expensive, more up to date. Oddly enough, the standard ones designed in house at Mercedes seem to me to suit the 'beast' best. Presumably that's why the professional designers at Mercedes chose them. And the Merc ones will be strong enough for your weight. They last well in UK salt, sand and grit. And they are a lot easier to clean that steel. They will provide the perfect finishing touch, plus they'll stop you thinking you've spoiled the ship for a ha'porth of tar etc. Long way back you said 'one of these two wheels' will be it, if you choose alloy. Stick with that instinct, say I.

  You haven't seen the interior :D I just don't want folks to get too annoyed with all the repetitive questions.

It sure is.
What did you think John meant when he said he had a flotation unit in the back.
It's the air pressure from all those speakers that keeps him afloat:devil:

:D :D I'm into Aerosmith, Ozzy Osbourne, Guns-n-Roses, but........ She that does the driving does not appreciate the sides of the vehicle vibrating   Women!

Finding proper commercial grade alloys is not easy, and I'm now leaning that way. Here is another alloy that is a commercial grade:

At present though the OEM Mercedes Sprinter wheels are top of my thoughts.

The wheels on the vehicle are definitely going, there is nowhere local that can do chroming, so it looks like alloys.

:D Hi Hawk,
A decision has been made and all will be revealed as soon as the result is available.

I just hope the flashing neon lights are not too distractive.
