Respray the stretched limo

I could do it inside and outside for you John, but the limo would need to be up my way, so that makes it a bit harder to sort out.
Also, a full colour change is not a quick job, especially with base and clear systems.

:D I know your serious, but you lot are coming to my house for nourishment :) NOT punishment.
I had thought of this too, it could be good fun..
If you leave it until after then we could all have a go with different polishers and products. Rotary Vs porta-potty...
That way if the paint is wrecked :o you would be getting it done anyway...glass half full and all that..:)

The last thing I would want however is for the door skin to be blue, then when it's opened the red is there for all to see, that would be a deal breaker.

I have absolutely NO idea of costs and have put my thoughts onto the forum before engaging mouth with the professionals.
You'd be about as cheap to buy a new Limo..

I hope my tactless thoughts on 'silver' have not upset the numerous silver coloured car owners and at present a shade of this colour is on my list :o (about 99th  )

Something about Christmas cards and lists comes to mind..

If you like the original colour why not get the faded bits either polished or sprayed then the whole exterior laquered over the top with a UV proof laquer. That will stop any more fading without having to spray the whole vehicle and the issue of colour change.

And boy will it shine.:)

John
Here's what I meant about he black infills between the windows. Very rough as I only had 'paint' to work in.

Also I'd look at adding the black into the lower recessed rubbing strip line, or getting some strips as this will break up the side of the vehicle and make it look slicker and less, cough, cough, van like.

Also, go for a 2k paint system, not the rubbish paint they use on MB's now:rolleyes:

Can you still get that, I thought it had all ben phased out due to environmental issues.

UV proof lacquer. This is yet another example of the wealth of knowledge there is on this excellent forum.

Rather than phone the body-shop, I think I'll chat up my chauffeur and grace their premises with my presence :o :D

Thanks for the information,
John

It is still available, but you now have to be licenced to buy it.
I have the said licence and also enough of it in storage to paint 20 or so vans.
5 ltrs of 744 silver too;) :D

John,

Check Vigurs out - they have always done excellent work for me, including a new door for the e-class - should be able to provide advice as well. They are always busy so a visit is usually better than a phone call though.

PS - congrats on the 10k post, I missed that one :bannana:

Hi Mike,
Thanks very much for the excellent advice, I usually use Paignton Autobodies but might pay Vigurs a visit.

The van gets a really good polishing at least twice a year and washed\shampooed once every month or so. Is it the fact it is parked up for weeks and sometimes months on end without being used that does the damage?

I am pretty sure the problem is, has been and always will be, red paint - fact of life if parked outside.

Mike

Paint it pink!

Just kidding, I think Silver would be really nice, classy colour, cooler than a dark one too. :)

Paint it pink!
:D :D

We ought to have a sweepstake in guessing the costs of a decent respray (NOT PINK) :)

Who dares start the ball rolling

Metallic finish inside and out.

Regards
John

I go up a bit, probably nearer £5k to do all door-shuts and what about in the engine bay?

I think this would be a good colour to do it, regal turquoise:

That is a really good idea especially if you want to keep the existing colour.

That is usually the reason why you get fade, but I think even if you used it, the nature of the paint plus the fact that it is a flat red means it will deteriorate. I used to have a red Audi ('94) and the bonnet and boot on that faded to pink in much the same way as you describe. No matter how often I polished it, it kept going back to pink. It was so annoying.

I think whatever colour you choose to paint, the UV laquer will help give it longevity. I am considering re-doing the paint on the 500SEL (Limo Black  but no fade and excellent A/C!) and as it tends to sit for long periods without being used also, I will definately look for some kind of UV protection.

I must confess that I liked the very rich, deep candy red that was on your link and I would expect any metallic colour to be more resistant to the sun's effects, but I have no experience of these exotic paints?

I like that too  we have a 1973 VW Beetle that we are doing a resto on and I decided that when it comes time for paint we are going for the candy red with a white racing stripe or two (offset to one side) & loads of laquer for a deeeep shine. A Polish guy I know took his Audi A6 back to Poland for a custom paint job - not sure I want to go that far!

That is delicious  Like those white walls - Kerchow!

I guess if you go for a repaint then the wheels are gonna look mediocre...and then there are the bumpers - chrome or colour coded? Will you be requiring an interior makeover? :D
