Hi guys.
Bit of a daft idea that may not even get off the ground.
I've just been informed that I am going to be a dad for the third time.
As I have a w124 saloon it only has 2 proper seat belts in the back that can be used with kiddy seats.
Has anyone attempted. Or is it possible to retrofit a third in the center?

I figure I could get parts easily enough but wonder about a top mounting location. I figured it would be possible. At worst requiring a plate be welded in the boot to strengthen the area as loads on seatbelts in an emergency are immense. Other than that just some cosmetic work to make the job look standard and in keeping.

Any thoughts guys?
I really don't want to part with my car for something "practical".

Thanks
Dan

I think you would have to modify the parcel shelf to fit a three point belt. The car I broke for parts last year only had a lap belt in the middle which I still have if it is any use to you. :)

He should have that but is not good for baby seat
Dan:There`s a company that suplys the base for you to put 3 child seats at the rear,I`ll see if I can find a link

I think they're called quickfit safety belts or suchlike Dash.
Try a search for "replacement classic car seatbelts" as they specialise in that.

Gosh this is going back a bit. Dont Volvo do a set of slim line child seats. Bit pricey I seem to remember but very safe of course.

Hmmm I see what you mean about not cheap lol.
I'd be looking at £1300 to kit my car out :0I

I can't see me parting with that kind of cash. My car cost a quarter of that. And babies cost a hell of a lot more lol.
My diy conversion is looking more likely lol.
Perhaps diy isn't the right term for it. Sounds a bit Heath Robinson lol.

Nip into a Volvo:ban: showroom, they may be able to help. See my earlier post.

I'm sure this company could help or advise. About the UKs leading seat belt specialist – Quick Fit SBS Ltd

here's article about MB's http://www.quickfitsbs.com/PDFs/mercedes-benz-club-august-10.pdf

Failing that I seem to recall kits for estates involving a tubular cross member mounted at both sides. The main engineering requirements are for thick steel mounting plates to spread the load and the use of appropriate seat mount bolts nuts and washers of the appropriate grade e.g. as a minimum spec M12 8.8 grade fine thread.

Cheers again guys.
Grober. That looks just what I need. Just a question of price now.
However. They don't appear to work Saturdays (like us lol)
Shall call them Monday, fall over laughing when quoted a grand. Then diy option is on lol.

To be honest the article has given me some ideas about how to do it.
I am now convinced that I can mount to underside of the parcel shelf. And feed belt throughout a neat slot at the front edge of said shelf.
Just a case of strengthening and nice conservative trim on the shelf. I am sure I can reclaim all parts from the breakers if I find a suitable donor car.
Hmm I'm off thinking again

Cheers again

It might be better to up the spec of the bolt from M10 to M12 to yield a bigger bolt head? :dk: Your best bet is to have a look at the existing seatbelt mount bolts as a guide. Its quite possible that any aftermarket kit you buy will come with suitable mounting hardware.
I should perhaps add that in today's litigious climate that perhaps its a job best left to the pros or at least using an approved kit?

Yeah I agree to upspecing. After all it has to be trusted with my latest clan member lol.
Am still giving thought to running a square steel bar below the parcel shelf also to give extra peace of mind. I'm not sure just how strong the shelf is standard. And if it could take the loads needed should the worst happen.

I see your point there. Perhaps your right.
I will still look into it. However as always I'm a lazy bugger and chances are I would rather have somebody else do it than myself lol.
I'd rather give her a damn good polish than lift spanners any day.
Shall see what quickfix say on Monday.
