Roof Cargo Box and Bars - Which One ?

Hey folks,

I am after a roof box and bars. Never had them so no idea who makes decent stuff. Tried searching the forum but this doesn't seem to have been covered.

It is for ML W163.

Also, does one need side step bars to get to the box? Cos my ML doesn't have any and I don't like them (extra weight!). Is the box still going to be accessible? I'm 5' 10".

Best on the market are Thule, for boxes and rails, and their easy fixing system is invaluable if the fit is difficult to reach. But they are expensive - clones may be just as good for less. Re access, an ML with a box on top is pretty high, though by standing on the car door cills you will probably be able to stretch in. I would ensure the roof box is one of those that can open from either side - would be all but impossible to load it properly otherwise.

You can get Mercedes dedicated bars. They too are expensive, but often available on Ebay. I got mine for £25. I have a Thule box. You will need a small step ladder (step stool even) ideally to gain access. My box opens one side only, I've never felt that it was difficult to load.
