Driver crashes new car 'because he didn't read the handbook'

A driver crashed their brand-new car four hours after picking up the keys because they did not read the handbook, police said.

The Volvo hit a slow-moving articulated lorry on the A30 at Cheriton Bishop, Devon, on Saturday afternoon.

The driver tried to "figure out cruise control" by looking down at the wheel buttons while driving, officers said.

Devon and Cornwall Police added on Twitter: "The moral of the story is read your handbook." No-one was hurt.

Police said the car had been travelling at the national speed limit on the dual carriageway of 70mph and the Volvo's support system - designed to help the driver avoid low-speed collisions when driving in slow-moving traffic - only works at up to 35mph.

No. - Driver crashes new car "because he's an idiot".

I don't understand being too proud to read the manual, but if you're going to look at the wheel buttons, don't do it while you're driving.

I'm surprised there wasn't an audible alarm to let him know he was closing on another vehicle fast; my CLK gets quite vocal in a similar situation (i.e. I'm doing 70mph and there's a lorry doing 50mph ahead).

I'll hold my hands up and admit that I'm far too impatient to read a car manual.

I'm more likely to pick it up and get driving, hate handovers.

I may skim the manual at home if it's a brand that I'm not driven before but manufacturers spend much time and money making the controls intuitive.

The basic operation is the same in all cars, if I'm not sure how the cruise control works I'll leave it for another time.

Real headline:. "An imbecile crashed their car because they had forgotten the basic fecking driving skills of using your fecking eyes. The ****."

Oddly as it may seem, I am borrowing my mates two week old Landrover Discovery Sport for a trip up north tomorrow. Now no matter how clued up I think I may be, the manual is with me as I write this post. Read it from the comfort of my sofa rather than the Services on the M6.

I read the manual but the truth is reading the manual these days is hard work. They contain 50% useful information and 50% backside padding in the form of those red triangle exclamation marks that announce the bl**din obvious "Warning Risk of injury" I don't read those.

I just heard a couple of the people calling in to the radio on this subject, retards the lot of them.

Completely misunderstood the issue, most think that it's the fault of cruise control apart from the lorry driver who thinks that all car drivers should be taken off the road.

Real men don’t need instruction manuals , although we sometimes read them afterwards to see how good they are .

In all cars the pedals mean the same thing, so does turning the steering wheel left and right to turn the wheels...

So there’s no excuse to crash a car due to not reading the manual.

Admittedly stuff like cruise control can vary greatly between models, again to work this out you don’t need to read the manual, just have a decent eye sight and half a brain... have a quick look over the buttons before you set off.

Stupidity seems to be the norm nowadays.
