Hello

Took my ML to Mercedes for them to look at the tiny bit of rust, two small bits on the rear arch and under the tail gate near the boot release. (will post pics if I can) but its not much.

Just thought best see what they say now rather than wait,

Anyway they have just rang back after sending pictures / claim in.

Bearing in mine the car has a Full MBSH to 32K and then indy from 32K to 50K now.

Mercedes will on a Goodwill repair cover 70% of the work with the remaining 30% for me. Total price £273 inc vat.

I asked what would actually be sprayed for that the small parts (such as the inner arch or the panel. Apparently they will spray the compete rear hatch and two rear wings.

Now my question, £273 for what actually needs doing still sounds a lot, I was thinking some rust killer and hamerite would sort it.

Is it worth doing? will it get a lot worse quickly?

It was reasuring to be told that all the panels are original as he went round the car with a gaget, 120 to 135 something or other it read..

I'm unsure what to do... oh and they could do it right now (so no jobs then.....mmmm)

Do you really want Hammerite on a car like yours? I wouldn't and nor will any potential new owner when you come to sell it. Take them up on their offer, you will get a guarantee for the work if it is done properly by one of MB's approved bodyshops.

I agree - not knowing the full details (ie, how old the car is etc), £273 sounds fair if they're going to do a good job and guarantee the work (if the rust comes back it's down to them :) ).

You'd struggle to get a good job done privately for that much so I would say it's not bad value. Much better than trying to touch it in - surely not a long-term solution?

If you feel that they should be covering the full cost of the repairs then consider further negotiation. Is the car under warranty or is this just as a matter of 'goodwill' on their part?

Will

Hello

My car is an 03, It has full MB history up to 32K and then two indy merc services up to now just 50K.

They just said it was good will offer from mercedes, I didn't push for more off? is it worth it asking..

I will take some pics as on the face of it, it is very litte. I understand though good point if the rust somes back its their problem?? how long is the repair guaranteed for though?

Thanks

Guarantee will be at least one year, minimum but you may be able to negotiate longer.

I've just taken a pic of the back handle and rear arch and it really is tiny. If the guarantee only lasts a year thats not such a good deal?

Have to say I'm a little worried as they have to paint the whole boot lid and both rear wings, thats a lot of paint? match etc...

Pics of one arch and the rear handle, didn't take the other side as the cars parked in the lean to but you get the idea..not bad??

That's just going to grow if you don't get it done properly, I'd jump at the chance to have the job done professionally for that price.

Agreed, don't leave too long, MB might revoke their offer if you don't accept!

Paintwork under warranty

I bought my car when it was 2 years old. The bootlid had a rusty bit around the lock and the bonnet had some rust around the inner where the hinges are, also some stone chipping. Thought I would be cheeky and ask about it even though it did not have the dealer service history. They agreed to do it and the car was away for about 3 weeks, they put a new bootlid and bonnet on and painted the edges of the front wings which were also starting to go. About 18 months later the rear wheel arches started to go just as yours have so I thought I would approach them again to see if they would have a look at it. They were a bit reluctant because of the lack of dealer servicing but said as a goodwill gesture they would do it if I would pay something towards it. I thought this was fair enough, they said the job would cost about £1500 and would I pay 30%, I agreed and had the work done. The best part? When I collected the car nobody mentioned about my share of the payment so of course neither did I. Don't know if it was an oversight or what but it cost me nothing. I know of several people with cars older than mine who have had extensive work done to their cars, in one case 4 doors, bonnet and bootlid renewed, so it is always worth asking. I am still busy chasing rust from one end of the car to the other of course, but the bonnet and the boot are immaculate. I have just been looking at a neighbour's 53 plate S Class and sure enough the wheel arches are showing signs and the jacking points underneath are covered in rust. Things don't seem to have got much better.

Hi there,

Just so you know I have a 02 C-class coupe. 93,000 miles on the clock. Had MBSH till 50,000 and indy SH from then till now. Rust was found on all 4 wheel arches on my car. MB paid 100% of the cost to rectify 3 of them but would not cover the 4th due to it having been resprayed previosly. I thought this was a bit of a cop out as there was rust on every wheel arch but I guess that is just business. I tried to get any contribution to the last wheel arch but they were not budging. Unless you have caused this rust which is unlikely, I would push for them paying 100%.

Hi A210AMG,

I'd definitely want to get that sorted as soon as possible. Good job there is no salt on the roads at present...

I am perplexed where they get "good will" from though...? As the car is under 8 years old I suspect that they have a duty of care under the anti-perforation warranty... :dk:

Any other views?

MB do lots of things as goodwill, as it doesn't accept liability in the same way as repair under warranty/guarantee, and as such doesn't set such a clear precedent legally if they change their willingness to help later.

Mechanical parts are often replaced or part-funded by goodwill contributions as Mondial might refuse the repair under the specific terms of their agreement to offer warranty cover.

Update

For £300 and the fact the guarantee then only last 1 year I'm not going to take Mercedes up on this offer.

In my view its very little and a would think a local spray garage could do it for half that price if not less. I'm also not keen on having the whole rear tail gate sprayed and the two side pannels.

So there you go, It maybe the wrong choice but that's what I have decided. If I take it to a local spray garage I can also ask about some other little touch up bits while there.

Thanks for the help regarding this

Ok - half that price is £150 --- 30% of that price is £90..... am I missing something in your maths??

The former with a local bodyshop -- the latter with MB + warranty. Have you been officially told its for one year? ...

I would say he meant that £ 273 would be his contribution, ie £ 273 = 30% therefore £ 910 = the total cost of the repair.
