That should sell very well in China.

If only it was hard top! My dad really wanted one in a hardtop, due to a previous incident with a softtop.

Is it me or is that about the same size as an A124, only with higher claustrophobic sides...?

Mercedes S-Class Cabriolet spied

From the article:
According to the latest automotive spy news , the open-topMercedes S-Class will receive its world premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September so it shouldn't come as a surprise this near-production prototype had only a bit of disguise on it. The front end was completely exposed and only the rear half of the car carried some thin plastic camo while the rear end was hiding the taillights which appear to have a lot in common with those of the S-Class Coupe upon which the Cabriolet will be based.

Am I right in thinking that this is the first S-class cabrio since the W108 in the late sixties/early seventies?

Mark/gary, again, please search before posting. Threads merged.

S Class Cabrio

Designsketch-626x382.jpg

Given that the forthcoming S-class cabriolet will threaten to cannibalize exactly nothing in the Mercedes lineup, Benz is taking some unusual liberties with the car. The most obvious so far is “leaking” a detailed sketch that shows both the interior and the exterior styling.

Due on sale here next year, the S-class cabriolet will be the first S convertible since 1971, and it will be available with all the usual S-class engines and with both all- and rear-wheel drive. It’s also the sixth variant spun off the current-gen S-class, enough to nearly stretch end to end across Vatican City. The cabriolet will join the sedan (W222), the long-wheelbase sedan (V222), the superlong Mercedes-Maybach (X222), the relatively short coupe (C217), and the oh-no-they-didn’t mega-stretched Pullman.

The sketch shows that the droptop will share much of its aesthetic with the gorgeous coupe, including the sloping, chamfered rear; scalloped sides; and semi-clamshell hood. The open-air car, however, will feature a reinforced set of A-pillars to keep it in line with its siblings in terms of crash safety.

A full four-seater, the center console will flow between the front occupants and into the rear compartment, and the car will carry over the S-class coupe’s highly attractive dashboard. The W222 S-class was launched in 2013 and Benz delivered more than 100,000 of them last year, outstripping competitors like Audi’s A8, BMW’s 7-series, Jaguar’s XJ, and the Lexus LS.

That will be fantastic, unfortunately the s65 can not come with the AWD due to space issues, that is what I heard. On that basis I think the 63 S drop top with AWD would be great.

Quite nice looking but….

There are many people, including me, who have/had two seater convertibles and notice that the wind deflector behind the seats makes quite a big difference to cabin air swirl/buffeting. Do owners of four seat convertibles not experience air swirl/back draft in the same way or am I missing something fundamental?

Hi GVM, my friend had a E46 M3 convertible and it was unbelievably comfortable on a memorable trip up the motorway to Notts for the weekend. Likewise at the other polar end of the performance scale my mothers old Herald 1360 was equally draught free. I guess the extra volume of the rear seat area must be more sympathetic to aero dynamics and or change the natural resonance significantly to reduce buffeting.
