As I'm booking the E class in for it's suspension recall, I saw someone saying about updating the software to the latest versions.

This is what ours says at the moment, is this the latest ?
If not, is it standard that they update, or do I have to ask ?

Turn the key to position 1, press "menu" button on wheel until the speed/temp display is up.

Press reset quickly 3 times

The voltage is shown.

Press the arrows to change screens, until you get firmware screen.
Then turn key to position 2 to see full list.

Thats only the version(s) of the instrument cluster

MB dealers won't update firmware unless there is a real reason. There is a good reason for this, (a) it takes time & thus someone gets billed (b) sometimes ECUs die when they are being re-flashed.

On the W211/W219, I find it is worth updating the COMAND if its before MY2007 (you get ETA display and some bug fixes) (done with a disk you put in the COMAND), the AGW (audio gateway, done with Star Diagnosis) if its before Q1 2006 (fixes some TMC issues). Not all ECUs in a W211 can be updated.

Both Richard above and Olly (BlackC55) warned me that updating the transmission firmware might end with a bill for new autobox if the update goes wrong. Needles to say I did not pursue it....
