Sat Nav Problems - No signal & Map frozen

Over the last week, my sat nav has been playing up - not getting a satellite signal, or only getting 1 or 2 for most of the time, mostly a '-' tho.

I understand it might be the GPS aerial/receiver - where is this located. I have a W211 E320 CDi Saloon 2004.

Any other ideas on the problem?

The effect at the moment, is that every now and then, the whole COMAND unit freezes, with a message that comes up for a second or two saying 'Navigation activated.....'. When this happens, the radio goes silent, the telephone signal is lost. For the last few days, my location on the map hasn't changed.

I checked the engineering menu errors and there are a load which say:

Nav Map - Position updates timed-out.

Heyelpppp.....

Sounds like possibly two problems.

Firstly I would check the navigation drive in boot. Run a CD cleaning disk through it a few times. Make sure the navigation disk is clean and scratch free.

The other issue sounds like an antenna problem possibly but I would get the navigation disk checked/sorted first. Attack one problem at a time. Once you can reliable get a map to display without the freezing and the messages about 'Navigation being activated' we can then look at the satellite reception.

If you can access the engineering menu then you are running on old code and should consider the navigation drive and head unit firmware updates.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Alfie - I'll have a go with the disk first as you say. The map does display, it's just that the car doesn't seem to move anymore - previously, it moved based on the gyros thingy even when I couldn't get a signal (albeit that eventually it was miles out), but since the map froze (yesterday morning), I have been getting the Navigation activated message every few minutes which inteferes with the radio and telehone.

Re. the engineering menu - I get to this using the process of holding down Serv, then Mute, then Phone buttons per earlier threads. Where is the antenna housed?

Thanks again.

Okay. It sounds like your navigation unit is faulty:eek: Lets sort the disk first.

The antennae should be on the roof in the centre above the rear window.
