Selling a Vehicle on Ebay.

I'm pretty hopeless when it comes to using Ebay.

Each time I come to sell a car, I like to add plenty of images and use enhanced features. This (I think) results excessive selling fees.

I'm due to advertise my Vito and obviously want to present the listing with as much information and pictures as possible - perhaps even a video clip?

I will be selling at + VAT. Does that make a difference to the charges?

What is the best way to advertise without attracting too much expense?

Paul you've probably already checked but I'll say just in case. if you're selling via a standard ebay auto auction (different types of auto listings have different costs)it would be £10 for the listing (enhanced gallery is free for this style of listing but may be a couple of quid for different styles of listing, ie fixed price etc...).

You then pay 1% of the final value (min £20 but limited to a max of £35)

pls do specify weather the price includes the vat on the hammer price, as it is unusual to charge vat on top of the hammer.

You get 30 days for the advert to run, and you can link in as many pictures or a video if you like. Seems to attract less timewasters too, IMHO.

I am doing this from now on ... Too many people who click to buy straight away and then don't pay. Classifieds weed out these knobs.

It's also against the rules and ebay are prone to pulling ads that try and charge VAT on top of the auction or BIN price.

Think classifieds are exempt from this rule but may be worth checking.

I listed my Sprinter as plus VAT (I'm VAT registered) but the advert was allowed to run, until I ended it early.
I clearly stated to that the sale price would attract VAT but people seemed blind to this and bidding started gather pace.
I accepted a fair offer on the van which I was very happy with but was also pleased to end the sale before things got out of hand.
The bidding was up to around £3,600 (how much higher were they prepared to go?) meaning a sale of £4,320 for a 10 year old van with almost 190k on the clock.
Nice van, well looked after and lots of extras (rear seats, great hi-fi...) but someone was going to pay way over the odds.

I think I'll use a classified advert and mention that a VAT receipt will be issued. As long as I get the figure I want and hand the VAT part over to HMRC I'll be happy.

That's the route I'd take. Personal preference but I wouldn't sell a car on eBay and I wouldn't buy one either unless it was a trader with another website/physical address etc.

Search for other Vitos on whichever site you choose before placing the advert to get an idea of what else is on there and what you're competing with.

Auto trader is awful. Used them back in March for my CLK. Shocking user interface that doesn't work on mobile devices, only contacted by spammers, expensive and once I removed as I kept getting spam calls from Auto trader themselves!

Stick to eBay much better

Ebay turned out to be my friend. I wasn't going to pitch as high as I did until I saw some of the competition. Hassle-free sale conducted quickly.
I find Autotrader awkward to use for viewing, so can't see it being much fun to use when selling.

Autotrader does get a huge market but yes there are alot of spammers and scammers on there now. Amazes me how the same 'private' sellers always have a car advertised at '£495' to get to the top of listings and first line is 'real price £4950'

If anyone does decide to advertise on AT, my advice would be to buy a PAYG sim for the sale that you can throw away afterwards, stops the spam.

What about motors.co.uk? Aren't they free for prviate ads?
