after buying a 08 e class i asked about the service book you don't get 1 now i was told its all held on Mercedes Central computer. i then asked if i could have a print out of the services and was told we are not allowed to under the data protection act any one know if this is correct

I've never hard of the books being discontinued before now. How would you document services at other garages.

Smells of BS!

Yes it is all held on central computer, I found out when I was chasing up service history on my E55 and was told they couldn't give the information out like that.

I had to fax the v5c and driving licence copy to them at HQ and then they sent me an email with all the service history for the car.

yes I was told exactly the same when i bought my 2009 c class. I think I will be creating my own service book and getting it stamped and include all service receipts etc.

thanks guys not a very good idea if you decide to sell privately how you going to show its been serviced

With my car as an example I don't have the service book stamped only the email provided by MB HQ with the names of the dealers and the mileage services were performed at - I would pass the info onto new owner who can get this verified with the relevant dealer.

Service books are a doddle to stamp up though. Invoices and reciepts to back it up are generally needed i think.

Keep the invoice you get in a nice file somewhere, the new buyer could then confirm them all with MB if needed.

MB Park Royal had no problem printing me a copy of the service sheet when I bought my car back in March. They told me that keeping those sheets in the pocket in the 'service book' was the equivalent of the old service books. Hasn't stopped me buying one of the 'old' type though!

The data protection excuse is utter BS. Data Protection Act only applies to individuals, not cars.

Any ideas where there are service books availiable to buy, and are the mercedes ones model specific or do they cover most models?

The lack of a service book, if this is policy, smacks of being a heavy handed, contemptuous way of keeping the car within the dealership network for servicing, and should be complained about.

The data protection aspect may relate to invoices/receipts with the owner's details, but there should be a seperate record available of what work has been carried out within the network (big thanks to Tony Purslow's, who provided me with this for my SL when I first bought it).

But if you ask for the copy invoices etc for a service history, it may contain the previous owners details. Still BS I think

In NZL you are permitted to have the invoices for previous work done to the car if you have the previous owners permission. The prices are not included nor addresses, but the dealership will indeed print all the previous invoices, one at a time, showing all work undertaken on the car. :)

So print out the vehicle history with any previous names/addresses omitted.

Shimples.

As said earlier DP is just a ruse.

If it were illegal for MB to print out history with previous owners' names and addressses , it would also be illegal for DVLA to include the same information about the previous owner on the V5 - but they do . DVLA will also provide details of ALL previous owners for a fee .

If a government agency can legally supply this information , so can a garage .

MB Glasgow provided me with 20 odd years of service history for my W124 which they had looked after from new until a couple of months before I bought it .

I use the standard service book to record my diy maintenance in
