Had my first chance to actually look under the bonnet of the car.

I gave the engine bay and engine a clean when I got it but, today was actual research.

There's little doubt that the 10,000 mile service indicator was reset without any service actually taking place.

I had a look at the air filter and it's pretty dusty.

That pot on the right-hand side of the engine bay with 'hydro****** written on it must be the automatic transmission fluid and power steering fluid methinks. It is thin and deeply grey.

So, firstly I'll have to get one of those American 'Haynes'-type manuals.

The air filter is:

A611 094 03-04

and

AG1039 HBE 12/09 (this could be the batch number).

Ideally I'll use all Merc items but, since the car is so old and out of regular M B services, I might as well go for what I can get re quality manufacturers.

Not necessarily MB branded parts but the best.

I don't suppose Borg and Beck still exist do they?

So, come along now and help me out with some ideas.

Let's say the car has been abused for years and needs a proper service.

Air filter
Pollen filter
Oil
Oil filter
fuel (diesel) filter/s
Drain and renew hydrolic fluid
Drain and renew brake fluid
Drain and renew coolant

It's a straight six diesel E320 CDI auto estate on a V plate (2000).

And, I have another problem:

I turn the ignition key gently and the car starts but, the starter motor runs on for a second.

Have cars come along so much that this couldn't be a sticking solenoid.

Have you guys any nice photos of stuff to do with what I've mentioned.

I've still got to find the battery!

But I've conquered the most difficult job (a two-man job really) on the E320 CDI Estate.

Putting up the cargo net.

The issue is that scheduled services dont include air filters etc at every service, they are time related items.

The pot that you mention is not your power steering fluid, it is hydraulic fluid for the rear suspension. Get the fluid from the local dealer.

The filters you can get from your local motor factor... Use a good OEM brand like Bosch or Hengst.

As above the fluid is for your rear self leveling suspension and your power steering...if everything works, then leave it alone.

The battery is under a panel under the offside rear seat.

What's wrong with the cargo net...one man job.:p
