SL 55 power loss

I have recently come across a problem with my SL 55 04 plate where it looses power. This usually happens when I apply full throttle in 1st and hit maximum revs then it dies in 2nd with no power whatsoever, I can continue driving but when you put your foot down the engine revs but doesn't preform at all. When I switch the engine off then back on the car goes back to its usual self. The car doesn't show any malfunctions but I had a similar problem with my CLK 320 CDI however this was a split intercoolant pipe which I replaced and fixed the problem. Could this be a similar problem with the SL?

Does it happen in any other gear or only 1st?

I think there is an issue on the E55K where after some runs, the car loses power and it is to do with cooling:

Could be but could also be either throttle position sensor or throttle body needs reset, if the car sees a difference with what it is expecting it can kick into limp mode. You could try a simple ODB2 reader but do it when the car has the fault before you turn the ignition off.

OP - you might be able to help more if you give a little more details about anything changed that could have effected it. The only way you can really know is to plug it in to STAR though.

It's not just in 1st this also happens when been driving it hard for a while it looses power and sometimes comes again.

We did have an ABC problem which as been fixed by changing the oil in the shocks

leave the car in the ignition at stage 2 for 30 mins (turn off AC/radio/lights etc) the car will attempt to reset various sensors.

If you have an ODB2 reader or can borrow one grabbing any stored codes but more importantly checking codes at the time it happens may shed some more light.

I would also get your IC pump checked common issue on 55K engine it won't show up on an ODB2 reader.

Thanks Savman will get it looked at hopefully it won't be too expensive to fix.

In the end you could save ourself a ton of time and money if you could get the car plugged into STAR

Yeah we have a friend at MB dealer who works in servicing and has the MB diagnostic tool so ill give him a shout and get it tested.

I'm jumping onto this thread a bit late but wonder if you can tell me what an IC pump is please? My 55K is showing similar symptoms and having gunned it in second and third on Christmas Eve in the wilds of Cornwall, it changed into fourth I think at around 120 and there was an immediate power drop off. Prodding the throttle allowed me to maintain speed but now kick it down and it just felt as if it was limping.
When I stopped at a junction it seemed to be OK again so it's probably a high engine rev or high speed related issue.
My local indie told me his SL55 does the same but recommended I switch it off and go again, but its hardly a fix!
Any ideas?

A healthy 55K should be pulling right up to it limiter, if its holding back IC pump should be your first check.

Thanks very much for the advice. I will get my man to check it out and report back. There seems to be a bit online about the pumps being 'work in progress'. Anyone here decide to buy via MB, go straight to Bosch or can you recommended another manufacturer?
Thanks for the IC translation....I suppose I should have worked that out for myself! :wallbash:

Johnson make IC pumps for 55k motors do a search lots of info out there. This is almost certainly your issue common problem with these cars.
