Forgive my ignorance, but I wish to purchase an SL350. Could anyone tell me the month and year when it changed to the metal folding top from the usual rag-top + hard top? Being of a certain age, I'm afraid that the separate hard top option is no longer available to me, being too heavy. One reason why I may defect from BMWs after a lifetime of devotion.

The latest shape sl has always had a electrically retractable hardtop
The SL350 is the latest shape so I think its always had it

Hello Jon and welcome to the forum, like you I went from a soft top to a hard top when the money permitted this.

The 230 350SL was first made in 2001 but not sold until around 03-02.
when I bought mine I did not mind an early one as they are all virtually hand built at the start. There are no rust issues with them and the quality of the build is outstanding. There was a premium and waiting list for the first of the cars and many have lots of the extras fitted, as the years go by it is hard to find one with much over the basic spec. The first change was late 04 when the Command went to wide screen with the DVD option the last change was in 06 when it had the new engine that knocked off 1 sec on the 0.60 times but early ones are far from sluggish.
Nice to have extras include
Parking sensors
Comfort seats
Xenon lights
CD changer
Bose sound
keyless go
Panoramic roof (2003 on)
TV
Multi contour seats
Distronic
tyre pressure mon
Garage door opener
ABC suspension
AMG body kit
Cooler in armrest
I hope this helps a little

Many thanks TELEVISION, that info is most useful. And thank you for the kind welcome.

I presume you've discounted using a roof hoist?

IAN, roof hoist not possible as I live in "sheltered acommodation"! and have only access to a private parking area.:)

No chance of getting a friendly garage to take it off and store it for you..?

Many M-B dealerships used to offer this service (free of charge) when R129s were newer.

Hmmm. My local Mercedes in UK doesn't have a very good reputation for public relations! Local Mercedes owners travel over 100 miles round trip to get service from another dealer to avoid them!

Hi Jon,

Its me, use to be on the Z3 forums when we had the Z's, then I think we both changed for BMW 3 series and we had the convertibles. Now I own a merc but its the ML350.... and your looking for an SL350

Small world hey !!!

How's things

Hi... A210AMG (GRIN) small world or are we REALLY getting older and perhaps wiser! (GRIN) I've also got a new MINI Cabrio for the fun car, but looking for the SL350 as BMW cannot supply me with a similar type. I don't like the rag-top Series 6, need a metal lid now.

Hello,

I've had to change the cars for our litle one that in now 8 months old. I was kidding myself if I thought the 3 series could cope. Then the wifes MX5 went and we have a A class hence my log in A210.

Dads got a E320cdi Estate and SL500 (with the tin top) ooh and mum has a mini....

Hope you get a nice SL
