Evening all

I am having the engine oil and gearbox oil and filter changed on my SLK55- for peace of mind. My friend is a mechanic and works on the likes of Bentleys and looks after my brothers 63 plate M3 Le500- he knows his stuff!

Just wanted to see if their are any specific recommendations oil wise (I know there are often favourites- and not always the same as that of Mercedes!)

Any help and guidance for what oil for both- and any other crucial info much appreciated.

Thanks in advance..

***Seems to be a possibility it requires a pump and adapter.....slightly baffled.. Do any of you guys do your own servicing? Surely not everyone is going to a Main Dealer for such a small job?

Thanks guys

Here is the MB approved listing:
Basically a list of 'approved' makes and product names.
Mobil 1 is the obvious but there are literally dozens of others on the list with the all important MB 229.51 specification (but check in your hand book)....pretty sure that's what you are looking for, grade (viscosity) depending upon the climate ambient temperatures although 5W30 seems like the most common grade there are also 0W30, 0W40 & 5W40's that come with this all important MB spec. perhaps you could argue that 0W30 is better suited to cooler climates or winter although even this relatively thin oil covers a good temperature range due to it's multi-grade rating and by that token, the 5W40 slightly warmer operating range although as I say the range on both is substantial.

Much appreciated. Looks like a Mobil1 fully synth is the best option. I just recall from my previous car fFocusST) that people were vary particular about the brand and precise oil on forums- there were firm favourites...remember one guy saying the recommended oil by Ford was like 'water'.

Just wanted to make sure I was putting the best quality into the beast :bannana:

Thanks again- and any other input welcome

Can anyone clear up if you require a specialist pump to refill the oil post oil change on an 05' SLK55?

Sorry for all the questions guys.....

With respect..you are in the best position to answer that question..just a case of looking underneath the engine sump pan to see if it has a sump bung.

My first post on here :-)

Engine oil change is conventional, just remember there are TWO sump plugs to drain!

gearbox is a little more difficult. to drain it you need to break the weir pipe off inside the box, and to put it back on you will have to take the sump pan off so you may as well change the filter while its off. Only use a genuine Mercedes filter, some of the aftermarket ones are just carp. Also replace the bolts as they are stretch bolts, and its important to tighten them up to the correct torque. Make sure who ever does it has a torque wrench that will go down low enough!

Filling is a different matter, you have to fill from the underside, I use a simple pump to do this. there are some good guides on how to do this. You will also need to make sure the oil is up to temperature before you check the level. this can be done with an infrared thermometer, or even a magnetic one. Its not as critical as some will have you believe, but it does need to be close.

I also found Mercedes dealers were as cheap as anywhere for the gearbox oil...

Where are you based?

Here are the thermometers I used to check the temperature... all three are on the radiator so I could see they were calibrated OK!

Thanks so much.....
that is massively helpful

I am based in SW London.. just wanted to make sure my mechanic has all the know how required.....
